2026 US-Denmark Tensions/End of NATO

Which is why Carney mentioned, this week, that China is more predictable than the USA. After all, the Chinese always take the long (very, very long) view and are extremely consistent in what they say or do over long periods of time.

P.S. This is not a comment meaning we agree with China's positions, just that they are consistent with their positions.

For anyone calling it "noise"

Ah, yes. The old "I'm going to tax my own people until other countries do what I say" approach. If the world learned anything in the last year, it's that we're better off trading amongst ourselves than with the US.

It's definitely not wise to trust a government that tells you it will do one thing then does sometbing else.

Sounds like every government I have known.

Trump is just faster and doesn't even try to apologize.

I think PM Carney should quietly approach the Premiers and see if they would be supportive of offering the option to Greenland of joining Canada as a new territory. If there is no significant opposition then it could be presented to Greenland & Denmark as a possible de-escalatory off ramp to the current crisis.

For Greenland it would essentially be a lateral move. Going from being a territory of one Western nation to that of another. There would be some advantages for them. They'd be closer to their parent nation and they would be joining a country that also has a significant Inuit population.

Canada would agree to expand our NORAD modernization plans to cover Greenland as well and our Golden Dome participation would similarly cover Greenland. Being part of NORAD would mean that effectively the US would have the same ability to defend Greenland as if it were US territory. All sensor date would go directly to the US and missile defence would be integrated with NORAD. We could agree to continue the current agreement the US has with Denmark to allow the US to deploy its forces there if required.

Our politicians shit their pants when Ford dropped an anti-Tariff ad and Carney scrambled to apologize. I can't see Carney even joke about that with himself the dark.

I'd pay money to watch Trump's head explode after hearing that news.

This will be interesting to see how its received by the US. I think that our sending our official Head of State, in essence representing the King, is quite a statement. I haven't heard of any other heads of state going to Greenland recently or in the future.

"With Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Governor General Mary Simon set to visit Greenland in February to discuss opening a new Canadian consulate, MacKay said it is “unthinkable” that Trump would speak about taking control of Greenland and potentially using military force."

Looks like the date is set for 6 Feb.

I think the "Canada after NATO" thread should be unlocked. There are lots of questions and issues related to the potential end of NATO that aren't related to the Greenland situation. Discussions like Canada joining JEF or Poland getting nuclear weapons shouldn't derail a thread about Trump wanting to annex Greenland.

Concur. I'm sure we're capable of keeping a separate thread on that separate subject on the rails. Greenland deserves its own focused thread at present.

I'm looking forward to the rise of the Sino-Canadian 'alliance of calm' against the forces of global chaos.

Our shared values will be represented by, of course, a famous 'not so stormin' Norman' ;)
