Iran Super Thread- Merged

Man, who friggin’ knows. But we’re already at the point of a world leader threatening the death of a civilization… It’s profoundly, unabashedly evil even just to say or threaten that, but even still we’re gonna see people line up to minimize, defend or even support it. Only using such a threat as a rhetorical device or negotiating tactic is still evil… The U.S. is the world’s biggest power, nuclear armed, and its president is threatening the death of a civilization.

I’m so sick of how normalized all the things he says have become, how incremental the utter madness has been to the point where something like this can be said and we’re all responding with a raised eyebrow like “oh well that’s slightly crazier than two days ago” and then we carry on.

Stepping outside of my clear distaste for Trump as a person and president- what does this do to America’s place and influence in the world?
If this becomes 'normalized' to the average American, just imagine what he can say/do to other countries - like Greenland or Cuba or Canada.

Hegseth is reading passages from the Bible, Exodus apparently, while the rescue op was underway…

No one knew they had the pilot, until they made the announcement that they did? It doesn't take much to put 1 and 1 together to figure out they didn't have both at the time. As for the WSO that whole saga is documented here, including the ground zero source that everyone was citing that knew about it hours before it was official. And it wasn't a news org.

Well the fact that the Iranians had the ejection seats and no bodies nearby so it would be pretty obvious to the them that there a couple Americans on the loose.

And speaking about Opsec, I was reading a transcript about Trump describing the rescue of the WSO and he said (IIRC), " he was climbing to the high ground like he was trained." So the next time there is US aircrew down behind enemy lines, the bad guys now know where to start searching!

It’s probably just my rampant and irrational TDS, but I find “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” sort of concerning as a statement from the U.S. President..
Expect to see these words entered in evidence at a future trial in The Hague. Trump himself likely doesn't have enough years left in him to care but Hegseth and a few military leaders might see their travel outside of the US very limited to a few other non-signatory countries.

There are some out there that are speculating that this means nuclear weapons. I would hope that even Trump wouldn't be that foolish....

No, I truly can’t see that happening.

It’s likely 90% stupid escalatory bluster. But that doesn’t mean he won’t still do something awful.

What's more disturbing is that we live in a world where people handwave this away and we have to take the President of the US less seriously.

And more than a few Canadians adore Donald as well.

He’s a lunatic.

First comment (at least the one at the top when I opened it) on twitter in response the Tweet someone shared of Carney's comments on this:

"Man someone tell trump to just invade us and give this goof a job as his driver or something. Good for nothing fuck"

Yea....

Large grain of salt, but these are the first numbers I think we've seen in a while. They do have a lot of mountains to hide them under.

EDIT: Added WSJ source.

While I don’t believe those numbers for an instant, a tenth of that would be a real problem. And in the case of drones they can probably get resupplied from their own allies at enough of a pace to remain a problem indefinitely.

Years ago I remember reading about a gentleman who decided to develop his own cruise missile based on commercial off the shelf parts, who was later shut down by the national security apparatus.

But a quick review of the SparkFun website (among others) shows that GPS enabled computer boards are extremely affordable, and can be coupled with other equally accessible propulsion systems. While the systems are not hardened against spoofing, the democratization of precision munitions is happening, at affordable price points.

Edit: He's a New Zealander who wrote about it in 2003. The Missile Man - a book by Bruce Simpson

Edit again: more background. https://www.interestingprojects.com/cruisemissile/

Yup. The trickiest remaining part would be quality energetics. All the rest of it can be done off the shelf.

Really, a lot of what we’re calling drones now are functionally cruise missiles; just cheaper, slower, and in some ways lower tech.

Anyone who thinks only governments or large businesses will be able to access or use things delusional. Anyone with the time and motivation to build a Killdozer can likely build a large drone that will so to a specific GPS coordinate and, if they can source the explosives, blow up. A bit more work and they could be piloted over cellular or satellite data networks.

You're forgetting the Israelis. Especially if Iran unleashes a dirty bomb with some of that now missing nuclear material.

And with the right connections and many $$ one can build a nuke.

Iran has been reported as walking away from ongoing talks after this morning’s threats.

Pakistan’s P.M. is trying for a last ditch two week ceasefire.

In the event that we are heading for a nuclear holocaust this evening, I would like to bring up Trump and the Easter Bunny. Specifically who is the governing authority that should be complaining about the use of the Easter Bunny?
