OPP Charge 93 Year Old With Assault

This is the type of response you get when the system removes professional discretion. It has been Ministry policy for years that charges are to be laid in intimate partner incidents if the charge is made out (although I suspect in this case, 'intimate' is used loosely).

The senior's centre had to report the incident by law. The police had to lay a charge by policy. No copper is going to stick their neck out when there have been too many instances where discretion was exercised, it turned out not as planned and the cop was left twisting in the wind.

The Ministry spokesperson is being disingenuous by saying they don't direct charges; its policy clearly does.

No doubt this charge will go nowhere.

I've been trying to find a copy of Ontario's 'mandatory charge policy' document but am unable; although a number of other websites reference it.

I thought of that angle too. Sometimes, laying a charge is the only way to 'engage the system'; although I'm not sure that is the case here.

Cops decide to lay a charge knowing it will go nowhere but their butts are covered. A lot of 'domestic calls' end up this way. Buddy (most often) ends up entering into a peace bond and a getting a conditional discharge - the only condition being make a donation to a charity and, oh look, there's a representative sitting in the courtroom. Buddy gets it over with and can go back to work; missus is happy if she didn't want charges in the first place.

In some rural areas, the cops know the regulars and can almost pre-write the reports on a weekend night. For some it's a lifestyle. Doing battle on at night then seen shopping together at Canadian Tire or Walmart the next day.

Met officers taken off duty for misplacing weapons​

Five Metropolitan Police officers have been removed from front-line duties after a bag containing firearms and a Taser was left on a London street, the force has said.

The bag, which was discovered by a member of the public on Tuesday evening, was found outside London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan's home, The Sun reports.

"At this stage it is believed the bag was misplaced by on-duty officers a short time before the member of the public located it," the police said in a statement.

The Met's Directorate of Professional Standards has said it is reviewing the incident.

Inside the bag was a sub-machine gun, a pistol, Taser and some ammunition, according to reports.

The force said: "At around 21:40 BST a member of the public called police after finding a bag containing Met-issued firearms and a Taser on a street in south London.

"Within seven minutes of the call to police, officers arrived at the scene and safely recovered the items.

"We are urgently reviewing the circumstances of this incident and recognise the concern it may cause."

Oklahoma City police officers placed on leave over April Fools' Day 911 call to dispatchers​

The Oklahoma City Police Department has placed officers on leave after reports of an April Fools’ Day prank that sent squad cars in pursuit of a baby being thrown out of a car before the call was revealed as a hoax.

Oklahoma City Police Capt. Valerie Littlejohn confirmed Monday that an internal investigation was ongoing but would not say how many officers were placed on administrative leave or provide details of the accusations.

“We are aware of a reported pursuit involving some of our officers that included serious claims, which has since been determined to be false,” Littlejohn said in a statement. “We take this situation seriously and are committed to ensuring a thorough review is conducted.”

The investigation followed published police radio audio from the night of April 1, reported by Oklahoma City television station KFOR and other stations, in which a dispatcher says that the “city just advised that the suspect threw a baby out the window.”

“The police officer that’s in pursuit does not have a radio. He’s just messaging his location,” the dispatcher says.

After a number of officers responded to the report, a dispatcher can later be heard saying: “It was an April Fools’ prank.”

Another dispatcher says: “Not funny.”

Shouldn’t even necessarily need a conviction for the firing. With the amount of trust placed in police officers by the public the process to get fired should be a relatively low bar to hit.

It should not be easier to get fired from McDonalds than the police.
