At a certain point, the physics of material limitations are such that it would probably require multiple bombs down the same hole to get a really deep facility dug out.
Apparently you can only get a penetration depth of about 80 x the rod diameter. The rod hits at 1.5 km/sec, releases about the equivalent of 11.5 tons of TNT, but is mostly surface effect, probably because it is going too fast.
That riding is where Gordon Kesler won a byelection in 1982 in the separatist Western Canada Concept Party. If the Alberta Republic Party could only do 19% there today…that is pretty much their ceiling for voters.
