A question before I leave for IAP.

A friendly correction: ARMY Reserve Officers don't do IAP/BOTC. I bring this up as all reserves tend to get lumped together. Only the Militia (and maybe comm res, but I have no info about them) has a condensed training regimen for basic training. Other elements have a reg force equivalent...

    Family Military History

Interesting to see others family history. When I got to thinking about this topic, I realized my family has had a lot of military history, mostly taken for granted and seldom spoken about. I suspect that's true of a lot of Canadian families, and the quiet memories slowly fade out after a...

    Colonel's Gamble in Ramadi

Here's a working link to Kilcullens "Twenty-Eight Articles, Fundamentals of Company-level counterinsugency" - an interesting read. http://www.smallwarsjournal.com/documents/28articles.pdf

Running: Training, Problems, Techniques, Questions, etc

I downloaded the Army fitness manual last month too. I'm impressed with the various circuits. I meet the CF minimums no problem, been running and doing some weights for some time but this manual really rounded out my routines. By mixing and matching the exercises I can keep the workouts fresh...

    Infantry

If you have a bad back, "honourable service" may include considering making room for someone who isn't predisposed to injury when the physical stress level is high - which is likely when your team needs you most. I love people who make armchair assumptions about everyone else's job.  ::) I'm...

Amnesty says Taliban attack civilians to spread fear

Well, duh... At the same time, it is useful to have them say this. Many people will give a human rights group greater credence then military or even MSM sources. Anything that helps us  inform the public, helps the mission.

    Venture joining instructions

Hello all, I have a request: if any of you kind folk have a copy of this years joining instructions for IAP/BOTC at Venture, could you PM me please? I'm in that wierd spot of needing only my med file approved and I'm off to Venture next week, but until I get that checkmark I'm not officially...

Basic Training - Once For Life

Nice if you can get it. First I've heard of this. Mamma Bear, you said you got bypass while in St.Jean, is that correct? So not during the application process at the CFRC? Did they assess you in some way? Did you get any kind of refreshers/updates, like weapons drills with the C7 etc?

    The Martial Arts Superthread

Speaking of a stupid Aikido injury: I did a 180 pivot, and my little toe got stuck between two mats, broke with a little "snap" like breaking a chicken wing . Didn't even really hurt for a minute. I just stood there having a kind of "oh, wow, did that really happen?" moment.

    PRT Coverage

+1. This article is a refreshing change. I really enjoyed reading about some of the development side of the mission. Canadians need more exposure to this part of the mission. It was also good to read about how folks at home are responding to Major Courty's dismissal from NB Power.

Army.ca Meeting & Greeting in Toronto

Yeah, my thought exactly!  ;D Now that was a good time, with great people. Good to meet the people behind the usernames. Thanks to Danjanou for getting it all together. Once the pics are declassified, I hope some get posted. I saw at least three cameras...

    Proper protocol for Officer Cadets

When I was in before, I thought it was a bit selfish of an officer to just say thank you. Even worse if they didn't even really look at me. IMO, salutes are supposed to be returned and the ncm is also saluted, a sign of mutual respect. To just say 'thank you' felt like my salute was taken but...

    Naval Cadet in Afghanistan?

Ha. You and I are in the same boat. PM inbound. Three years in the recruiting process and now it's all down to that last minute med approval. Talk about hurry up and wait. If they don't green light me for this year, I think I'll scream. Ain't like I've got 30 years of career time left...at...

Army.ca Meeting & Greeting in Toronto

Can you bring some? I want it all healed up before I go to IAP in April. Esquimalt MIR staff: "Naval Cadet Bloggins have you been consorting with the Army again?"  Oh, the embarrassment  :-[ ;D

Gee, this smoker looks like it's gonna be a pretty good show! :pop: Then again,I'm not sure if I should be nervous about coming to this shindig or what...I might be in danger of catching a little moral turpitude, and I haven't had my shots this year.  ;D

Join the regular after being in the reserve

My interviewer at the CFRC told me that AirRes and NavRes IAP/BOTC was directly transferable, and follows the "soldier first" approach similar to St. Jean. Army reserve was not transferable without additional training like CAP or DP1 etc.

Decorated Canadian soldier beaten and taunted by his fellow citizens

Pretty cynical view, that. I personally think the average Canadian would be briefly impressed by MCpl Fitzgerald's award, but quickly lose interest. In this case I see some immature a**holes in a bar who got all bent out of shape needing to take on the hero to prove they are men. Speaks volumes...
