    Chinese Military,Political and Social Superthread

You can pick up a couple stories on the front page of The Economist.  Seems like one of their correspondents is actually in Lhasa, and hasn't been told to get out yet.

Name This Photo!!! - The AFV Recognition Thread

Hey Pallas, no one's got anything on the humvee, and I just don't know, so I guess since you're the last one to get something right, you better go next.

Most Youth Polled Fail CAN History Test (But Want History as Mandatory Subject)

Laurier Coureur des bois or Voyageurs (not sure which one they're looking for) Silent Revolution Laurier I think was covered in Social Studies 10 or 11, Coureur des bois would be in Grade 9, Papineau again, grade 9 or 10.  Silent Revolution might not be covered.  Since the history portion of...

Well, I suppose it's your turn again.  Maybe I'll get an answer on the 'pipes' some other time :D

Name This Photo!!! - The AFV Recognition Thread

Okay, this is going to be a bit unusual (and probably contravening some of the game's rules), but I saw an acquaintence's photos and can't ID them, so I figured I'd post them here. Whoever ID's that should go next, but game aside, I'm also wondering if anyone knows what those 'pipes' on top...

Name This Photo!!! - The AFV Recognition Thread

Bernardini X1A2 from Brazil. An old M3 Stuart with a new turret and 90mm gun, although I'm not too sure if the one in the picture is the -A or the A-2

RCMP Will Not Meet Recruiting Goal

The RCMP has a lot of competition for candidates; at the SFU Career Days this year, in addition to the RCMP, the Vancouver, Abbotsford, Translink, and Lethbridge (Found that one a little odd) police forces had booths out.  The VPD folks mentioned they needed around 100 more officers in the next...

25 Skills Every Man Should Know - Popular Mechanics article

Hmm, whoops! But if you were asking us, wouldn't you put the survey in the thread so that you could see the forum-specific results?

UVIC threads on Recruiting, Protests & Students against War

No, the problem is that there are too many people in University that don't give two hoots about the Student Society, so they can get away with such crap. Combine the resulting low participation rate in student politics with the power that is actually allocated to the Student Society, and you...

25 Skills Every Man Should Know - Popular Mechanics article

You seem to have neglected to include the poll.  Luckily for you, making a forum poll is not one of the 25 skills  ;D

UVIC threads on Recruiting, Protests & Students against War

Speaking of the Student Society, the Simon Fraser one has never been able to meet quorum to change their own bylaws - including the one requiring a 500 student quorum.  Yes, they can't get and keep 500 students at the meeting long enough to do anything at a school with somewhere on the order of...

    Indonesia To Buy Russian Weapons

Ask to hold on to some of their new toys as collateral when you dole out the soft loans.   ;)  It's not unprecedented for military equipment to be used for payment; IIRC, that's the reason South Korea has Russian AFVs in the inventory.

Initial Flight Safety Report: Snowbirds Accident of May 18, 2007

Interesting.  I saw them perform at Abbotsford last weekend, and they were flying with his position empty, which understandable and a little jarring.

18 South Koreans Abducted in Afghanistan

If they were convinced enough of their own salvation though, would they care?  Wouldn't that simply make them martyrs in the eyes of the rest of their organization?

Oh dear God, you must be kidding me....

I'll agree with that.  Singapore's justice system is known for being harsh, not corrupt.  And I don't get the planted drugs excuse - maybe if you want to frame somebody, but it seems an odd way of delivering valuable contraband given that the receiving party will need to know who the dupe is...

18 South Koreans Abducted in Afghanistan

Hmm, a friend's boyfriend (Korean, coincidentially) was in Afghanistan with a Christian/church group a year or two ago teaching English.  I wonder if it might be the same or a similar organization.

Oh dear God, you must be kidding me....

Mind you, I think Singapore's idea of executing drug mules, while overly harsh, also provides distinct incentive to check your luggage carefully. From an Amnesty International report on Singapore from 2004.  It should probably be noted that both women were 18 when caught, not when executed...

    éééÉÉÉéééÉÉÉ Help

That's the function button.  Certain compact keyboard layouts, especially on laptops, have fewer buttons than a normal keyboard, so they assign secondary (or tertiary, depending on how you want to view it) functions to certain keys.  The Fn key enables the alternate usage, changing, for example...

    Chinese Military,Political and Social Superthread

I wonder how much that has to do with having someone to hold responsible in case of defective products, as well as experiencing staff trained to serve customers. The thing about a large store is that they have a lot of, well, hostage capital.  The act of spending years and large sums of money...
