    Cost of housing in Canada

I grew up in Northern NB, where at the time the mill, the mines and the smelter kept a majority of the population employed either directly or through trickle down employment. About 20 years ago, when they all closed down in fairly close order, it caused a crisis. There were no well paid jobs for...

    Cost of housing in Canada

I'm curious why the realtor stats stopped including the houses on the market for the last 3 months. If they have one stat, they have the other. The other inference I make is either there are more than 50% of homes are on the market just to see if they can make a killing, or, 50% of the homes on...

    FWSAR (CC130H, Buffalo, C27J, V22): Status & Possibilities

May as well just tow it to the front gate of the Wing as a monument now. Can't see them spending the funds to repair this much damage on an aircraft supposedly being "retired".

CAN Enhanced (Permanent?) Fwd Presence in Latvia

I wonder how effective the current aptitude test is for screening candidates in and out. Is it really just an IQ/personality test to see whether someone has the "smarts" to do a particular trade? How much does it account for differences in cultural backgrounds, and where individuals are in their...

CMMA - replacing the CP140 Aurora

There was still a lot of demand for the C-17, but they didn't restart that production line.

Federal Government & Union spar over returning to office

Except that as soon as a manger tells Employee X they need to come into the office, while employee Y can work from home full time, there will be a grievance filed. Even if the manager has everything documented on paper, including proof that a set of metrics was developed and briefed to all...

    Cost of housing in Canada

But does no one remember 2008 housing crisis in the US? If mortgages were so much better down south, why did so many people lose their homes? Obviously the sub-prime mortgage rules were different than those indicated above. Interests rates, housing problems and mortgage affordability are...

Federal Government & Union spar over returning to office

I'm sure its likely better on a base or Wing, but in the NCR, there really is no true mechanism to ensure people leaving are doing a true clear out. When I released last month, I was given an NCR out-clearance form by my release administrator to complete. On it were only those items that the...

Allowances - Post Living Differential (PLD) [MERGED]

Maybe the issue is that we expect everyone to think of the CAF as a lifelong career. We keep screaming that it is retention that is the problem, but I ask why do we need to retain so many people for so long? If you read through this thread, it identifies what are perceived to be the issues: not...

CAN Enhanced (Permanent?) Fwd Presence in Latvia

The other fact that needs to be realized is that this isn't the old days in Germany. It is easy to say just post everyone on 4 year deployments with their families, they'll love it. Except have you spoken to any of those families who have done a current posting in Latvia? Are you aware of the...

    COVID vaccine mass law tort?

The Directive issued, and the orders given were very specifically written to allow for the splitting of hairs. No one was released for not being vaccinated. They were released for failure to follow a lawful order. This would mean that anyone challenging the final decision would first have to win...

Ottawa seeking ‘impartial’ board members to review military colleges

SL is very NCR centric, as is the testing. They C isn't what the majority of leaders need to be able to converse with their troops. Its so an individual can sound pretentious around the other EXs, speaking bureaucratic French. I sometimes think that the equivalent should be to expect...

    Cost of housing in Canada

There is also a need for expectation management by buyers. Everyone wants a house with a bedroom for every kid, an ensuite for the master, and a room for guests and inlaws. They want marble countertops and inground pools. And these are starter home desires. We seems to pick on immigration as...

Ottawa seeking ‘impartial’ board members to review military colleges

I won't argue the value of a degree in the Officer corps. But there is an aspect many are forgetting. That degree is a recruiting tool. I will use myself as an example. I would have never considered joining the military if I hadn't been accepted into the ROTP program. It was a means to an end...

    COVID vaccine mass law tort?

Specific to the COVID question, I would agree. However, it actually provides a better data set for resiliency given the additional trauma the crew incurred. This would be an area where the Navy could implement a long term study to track those individuals to see what the long term impacts were...

    COVID vaccine mass law tort?

I don't doubt the psychological and emotional impact this had on the crew. A study should be done 9despite the small sample size) on what worked to help build resiliency to the situation, or if there were individuals who had traits that predisposed them to react better or worse to this type of...

CAN Enhanced (Permanent?) Fwd Presence in Latvia

Because the infrastructure cost to recap them is so high there is no way the Army is going to prioritize them on their wish list. It is hard enough to get ADM(IE) to prioritize the funding to recap RCAF runways. And besides, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Quebec City all have large airports to accomodate.

    CH 47 Incident at Petawawa 20/June/ 2023

While I feel for the loss of the families, I think the true error lies in the fact someone told the families the positions on the crew could be withheld. That information was going to get out as soon as the initial report of the flight incident was released, so I'm not sure what the RCAF hoped...

    RCAF Ball Cap

The ball caps were not what I would call a quick win. I worked on the file three years ago, and it was a couple of years old by then. Just like on here, there were senior leadership (CWOs, not Generals) who went back and forth about whether it was the way to go or not. While the RCAF ball cap...

No more rifles on drill/grad parade?

But the nature of warfare and warfighting has evolved, as has the equipment that is being used. There will always be examples where soldiers come eye to eye with the enemy, or line up across an empty plain and march forward to attack, but those are the exceptions that make the rule. Much of...
