There are a lot of people from the Europe & the Middle-East who live in Canada, are good Canadian Citzens - and still have basic intrinsic values that reflect their ethnic group's values and morals.

You can find silk socks in the sporting goods stores. Wearing these under the green or grey socks will do the same thing as the black nylon ones we receive.

If we look at what happened to Iran - the Shah, with US backing, went forward with many democratic principles and western way of seeing/doing things... and we all know how...
Since we arrived in Afghanistan, we have taken many steps forward.
We should not be surprised if we are stuck taking many steps back....
Regardless of how far we though we had advanced, Afghanistan is still a backwards country that will need to claw it's way out of the dark ages over time.
