Not always the case. Some units allow the thermarest to go on top of the ruck. I have always kept my thermarest on top as it provided more comfort.

Never tried the Desert Magnums. I have tried other Magnums boots and swear by them for comfort and they breath (something issued boots do not do). As for the sole the Magnums are very soft and not like the hockey puck density of our issue boots so from my experience I would not expect more than...

I have nothing bad to say about Magmums. They resloved my planters fascitis and knee problems and fit wide feet. One thing that I love about Magnum boots that issue boots cannot do is they breath very well. Even though I found a boot that works I wish to give the Bates a try.
