Somali Islamic militant group Al Shabaab claims 2013 Kenya mall attack

That's probably where they get their ammo from anyways.

Somali Islamic militant group Al Shabaab claims 2013 Kenya mall attack

Where? Somalia? We tried that before and I can't imagine any government wanting us to go there again. It didn't turn out well for us or the Americans in the court of public opinion despite the reality on the ground.

The Air Force blew up this tiny ‘pirate boat’ with a 2,000-pound smart bomb

There are other technologies for reducing CDE then dropping a concrete slug. The GBU-39B and the BLU126/B are two examples of low-collateral damage bombs that use a reduced amount of explosive filling and, in the case of the GBU-39B at least, uses a casing that is designed to fragment into...

The Air Force blew up this tiny ‘pirate boat’ with a 2,000-pound smart bomb

I'm tracking the cost thing. A GBU-10 is just a MK-84 with a Paveway II guidance package. As an LGB, it requires someone to designate the target. This can be done by a ground based laze and if that's an option why not just engage with direct fire, or lazed from an a/c. If the goal is to strike...

The Air Force blew up this tiny ‘pirate boat’ with a 2,000-pound smart bomb

If they are trying to destroy pirate boats, inert bombs would work just as well. The kinetic energy or a 2,000 lb bomb coming off an aircraft at 400 kts from 20,000 feet would be tremendous.

    USAF Woes

USAF has ALWAYS been more involved in what used to be called strategic bombing then tactical bombing. Since around the 1920's there has been an idea that bombers could win wars without the need to land forces (see Douhet). USAF was basically created fostering this myth after the Second World War...

Looking for a non-fiction novel for English Seminar/Essay

Check out the books by George Blackburn. They are Where the Hell are the Guns?, The Guns of Normandy and the Guns of Victory. The series follows the author's experiences in the Second World War as an artillery officer. It is arguably the best memoir of any artillery officer anywhere and does a...

USE OF MOTORCYCLE IN CAVALRY TASKS

The artillery also used to employ motorcycles in dispatch rider roles but that has been gone for at least a decade. As for using motorcycles for recce the biggest problem I see is that a motorcycle can't carry sensors. Therefore, anyone using a motorcycle for recce is basically limited to the...

Officer occupations – Which one should I choose?

I did as well. The one caution I would give you is that it can be quite demanding managing training time and school work if you are not used to multitasking. Just make sure you have a good plan going in otherwise you may find your grades slip and depending on what you want to do after High...

    Logistik Unicorp Berets?

They do have the distinct advantage of being free and, with a little work, look not half bad.

This by far has been the funniest post I have ever seen on this site.

"Toronto police officer charged in Sammy Yatim shooting"

And I think this is where someone, in this case me, points out that the police officer in question is innocent until proven guilty despite what you think it looks like on that poor quality video.

    Justin Trudeau - Timelines

Trudeau already is elected. He has been a sitting Member of Parliament for some time now. I assume you are asking what will be the impact of Trudeau becoming PM if the Liberals form a government while he is still the Leader of the LPC?

TOPLESS WOMEN march in Vancouver for gender equality

Interesting that the CBC went with a photo of the Vancouver skyline to accompany this article.

What book are you reading now?

Agree with the assessment. Sears is one of the more accessible writers in this field without dumbing down the academic rigor. I'd also advise that prior to reading this book, read Chancellorsville also by Steven Sears. These two books taken together given an excellent narrative of the critical...

    Preparing for ARTY DP1.1

A few random thoughts: - Remember the phrase, "where cat tails grow, guns don't go." Further to OS' point, always DRIVE the ground before you bring guns onto it. Sometimes, especially in the late fall, ground will look good and will even feel good when you walk on it only to find that the gun...

    Preparing for ARTY DP1.1

And of that list take particular note of B-GL-371-004 Duties at Regimental Headquarters and the Gun Position. Especially read chapter 4 (Fire Discipline) and try to memorize as much of it, verbatim, as possible. Pay particular attention to memorizing the Observer's and CPO's sequence of orders...

    Map symbol for OP

That trend actually happened long before the First World War. Cavalry in the US Civil War had the primary function, in both armies, of maintaining contact with the other side (recce). The secondary role was that of raiders. Usually, both sides dismounted their troopers in any engagement and the...
