Lived in Lahr during the 3 Mech Commando era and while they were clearly a mechanized infantry battalion, they did where the maroon beret and CAR cap badge. Back in Ottawa in '83 and saw the RCR parade for their centennial and pretty sure 3 Commando was on parade as part of the regiment.
Agreed. I've watched BofB almost annually but only ever watched The Pacific when it came out. Not that it wasn't good and gripping but it lacked the "band of brothers" quality that I think made the former so compelling, especially since so many of them were still alive and being interviewed, and...
Had an office there in the early 2000s. The parking garage emptied onto Slater and because of the transitway you had to immediately turn right on O'Connor, a turn that was otherwise illegal for traffic in the other lanes of Slater. At the end of the month it was routine for the OPS to set up on...
Dad's first posting in '52 was to 17 Regional Ordnance Depot, then in Vancouver but in the process of relocating to Edmonton. He and my Mum lived in a one room apartment with a Murphy bed. They shared a refrigerator on the landing.
My Dad once told me that when he went into the regular army in '52 he had mandatory payroll deductions, one for the mess and the other for the tailor to pay for his uniforms. He certainly got good value out of his mess kit since he was still wearing it when he retired in '87. Not sure how much...
I still have my Dad’s pre-unification khaki service dress and blue patrols. Don’t know how often he ever wore the latter, except once for a court martial. Interesting thing about the blues, they have two sets of shoulder boards with his rank insignia, one cloth for undress and one braided for dress.
My Dad was stationed in Lahr in the early 70s and ended up running the senior hockey league. Two teams in Lahr and two in Baden. It was pretty good hockey and the Arrowhead arena in Lahr was usually pretty full for the games as I remember.
Was there not for a time, late 80s-early 90s, something called the Supplementary Ready Reserve? I seem to recall it as a transitional phase where there was still some kind of, I believe, annual obligation.
That was a change from the 90s fiscal crisis. Until the 1994 National Airports Policy, policing airports was a federal responsibility, as were the airports themselves which were run by the Airports Branch of Transport Canada. I was in TC Public Affairs at the time and we were rapidly developing...
Sorry to hear the RCAF Mess has closed. I have many happy memories of Friday lunches there with my Dad in the 80s. He was army but the RCAF Mess was closer to the JAG offices in the old Narono Building. It was well known for serving the best fish and chips in Ottawa on Fridays. In good weather...
