    Exercise Western Defender/Total Ram-CFB Suffield....

Except for during rehearsals (where I more often than not was enemy force), only fired 5 bursts total from my C6 and C9. Medicine Hat was a rather well done go, from what I could tell. The public took our presence well and it it certainly beat Suffield. Those fires were just ridiculous.

What'll CAN Coalition Mean for AFG Mission?

I expect this to be the very topic that undoes the coalition. Perhaps we could see a new majority coalition arise from the ashes of such an event.... A Unity Government ala 1917 composed of Conservatives and likeminded liberals? I highly doubt the coalition is a very cohesive political unit -...

    Passchendaele movie

Saw it on Saturday myself, and was impressed that the light for previous showing alternatively blinked 7:15/soldout. It surprised myself and my father moreso. The late showing was about half capacity, but the crowd was youthful and stuck around afterwards to watch the credits (in fact, many...

    Travel in Uniform?

Though there are some definate advantages to riding the plane in uniform, getting through security is always a bit of a hassle. The metal rivets in your combat boots will set off alarms, and I know people who have been forced to dress down as result. Your joining instructions for course may...

It was OK in Iraq before the Coalition went in

I've encountered it before, but from an Iraqi professor. While he agrees that Saddam was a bad man and is better off gone, he argued that racial and religious conflict was largely unprecendented in Iraq. With the exception of the Kurds, Shiis and Sunnis and Marsh Arabs and Assyrians and the like...

    Canadian Scottish beret

From my personal observations regarding the TOS and the balmoral, the only difference is the type of slant in wearing it. TOS are worn in a "straight" manner (both sides sloping down equivalently) whereas Balmorals tend to dip to the wearer's right.

    Any favourite BMQ memories?

Haha, I was in the other BIQ. You guys must've hated how we always formed up in your way!I remember our march NCOs talking as we marched towards each other outside the mess: "Let's not halt and see who wins"

The War of 1812 Merged Thread

pbi, I'm going to have to get back to you with the precise document, but if I remember correctly, it was likely one of the articles (on Red River), in the latest edition of "Readings in Canadian History" (pre-1867)... or at least it'll have some of my sources! I'll try to look it up for certain...

    Student takes grenade to class

A friend of mine actually did that in first grade. Brought it in for show and tell, told the class it was a dud (but authentic), and nothing came of it. How the times have changed!

The War of 1812 Merged Thread

You are correct - those were the motivations for Selkirk to act. However, in order to get allies among the government to assist him, his reasoning (as previously mentioned), was a means of getting it. Certainly there would be no American operations anywhere near the Red River - I believe Prairie...

The War of 1812 Merged Thread

ChristianMN, During the 19th Century, Lord Selkirk thought it was a wise idea to populate British North America with Gaelic speaking Highlanders. His reasoning was that with a different language and a fierce population than the United States, the remaining colonies would be better protected...

    Roman Army vs Medieval Army

What I was meaning was that in an anachronistic way, the point would be moop (since a date was never established).

    Roman Army vs Medieval Army

Thanks to the weird history of ancient Britain, in a way the Romans could be defending the homeland, after all, the Englisc are the Sassenachs (or Saesnaegs, or Sawznecks, whichever - it all means invader). It could be a Brittanic Roman Legion versus the people who live on the same land 1000...

    Any favourite BMQ memories?

My roommates told me of something like that I did. That week we had been learning about patrols, and had, naturally, been practising our parade drills with the invisible C7s. So one of the buddies is on weapons sentry, so when he's revived to "patrol the corridors," up I get in my tartan boxers...
