    Remembrance Day resources

Old Sweat, There are only two types of field batteries in the Canadian Artillery.  Those who have the honour of bearing The RCR cypher on their gun shields, and those who wish they could!  PRO PATRIA! Cheers, Dan.

    Camp Picton

ANG, Thanks for the site and photographs.  It's too bad that the camp has fallen into such a bad state of repair.  It might as well be plowed under now.  It does look like a fire problem waiting to happen. Does anyone have any shots of the 1950's building site when it was in use?  There must...

    Camp Picton

There is a statement about Camp Picton on the Canadian Guards site that goes "Early in 1964, the Battalion (ie 1 Cdn Gds) was designated the Standby Battalion for United Nations duty, due in part to its proximity to the Trenton air force base." Now if the Camp was closed circa 1968 due to the...

    Camp Picton

As there was some interesting discussion taking place about the former site of Camp Picton and it's connections to the wartime RCAF and the post-war Army, I thought it would be of benefit to centralize the postings away from the 'Rivers' thread for those wishing to add further. Below are two...

    Abbreviation help

Mystaround, 11 CBRB stands for the 11th Canadian Base Reinforcement Battalion.  CBRBs were the reinforcement holding units in the active theatres.  In the case of the 11th it was in NW Europe and followed the First Canadian Army until VE Day. Hope this helps. Cheers, Dan.

Army.ca member Jim Seggie among group awarded Medals of Bravery

Jim, I can do no more than to continue to echo the sentiments of everyone here who has posted on this thread before me. Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all others.     * Winston Churchill Courage is being scared to death—...

First Medal of Honor for a Living Afghan War Vet

Outstanding!  Congratulations to Staff Sergeant Guinta. Three years is a long time to have to decide if the action was of sufficient merit or not.  I'm glad it went his way. Cheers, Dan.

WW2 Canadian Army Formation Badge Question

OT, My two cents regarding your question is the following.  Every Canadian unit War Establishment (Infantry, Artillery, Armour etc) during the Second World War had two bodies of men that were a part of the WE but not a part of the unit's fighting strength.  These were the First Reinforcements...

Old Naval Guard's Random Questions - Canadain Army since WW2

ONG, Your question got me thinking and, inevitably, researching what little I could find on tactical air support for the Canadian Army during the 60's. To begin with, it looks like the RCAF left TAS to the Auxiliary squadrons in 50's.  Specifically to 406 Squadron in Saskatoon and 418 Squadron...

Unification is a child of the 1960s, so who is looking backward?

I was thinking about the issue of renaming Maritime, Land Forces and Air Commands with the names previously used by the three military Services of Canada, and I've come to the conclusion that it cannot be done, at least not in the manner that it's supporters would like to see. January 31, 1968...

    old style cpl rank insignia

Trigger, This is an article taken from 'Der Kanadier', the newspaper of CFE.  It shows MND Donald Macdonald inspecting a Guard from 3 Mech Cdo upon his arrival.  It was given to me by Al Ditter, the commander of the Guard. Spring 1971, CFB Lahr. I have a larger image which shows the details...

Photos of 1 RCHA at Sennelager 1970

Brian R, Thanks for the info on Ernie Beno's OCP Phase 1 class.  The person who provided the picture, Alex Itenson, was in fact a serving soldier from the PPCLI and was on the course with two other Patricias.  Are you saying that EB was an OR as well? Brian B, You're right (as usual).  I used...

Photos of 1 RCHA at Sennelager 1970

Brian, Since you mentioned Ernie Beno, I thought I would add this photo to the thread.  As you well know, Phase 1 OCP was a common-to-all training phase for officer cadets, so where one took phase 1 training could have had nothing to do with where one was headed for corps training in phases 2...

Photos of 1 RCHA at Sennelager 1970

Al Ditter (RCR by way of The Canadian Guards and 3 Mech Cdo) has allowed me to share some of his photographs from the 4 CMBG parade held at Sennelager on June 28, 1970.  It was the same parade that saw the formation of 3 Mech Cdo.  I've taken the artillery photos and posted them separately...

M113 APC Colour Scheme Fort York 1970

A friend of mine by the name of Al Ditter recently sent me some photos he had of Fort York and 2RCR from 1970.  This shot I thought would interest all of the scale modelers who are always looking for real-life examples upon which to base their projects.  Notice the two different patterns in use...

Today In Military History - Moyland Wood 18 Feb 45

R62, Great post.  The battles undertaken towards the end of the Second World War were among the costliest fought, but the most unreported.  Your example of the official history's version is a case in point. Thanks for making this available. Technoviking - The senior battalion in the senior...

    WAR OF 1812: UNIT RECOGNITION

Michael, I think your proposal has merit.  Grant a unit a 'privilege to commemorate' rather than a Battle Honour or a lineage descendency for the War of 1812.  I think you're also correct however, when you say that not everyone will welcome the proposal no matter how it is presented.  I can see...
