Bemoaning The Lack of Sports in The CF? [merged thread]

McG, I don't doubt they exist, I just never saw it while I was in Edmonton.

Bemoaning The Lack of Sports in The CF? [merged thread]

The CF has national sports  ???  Wasn't evident in Edmonton, except for maybe hockey, but as far as I saw, that was just base regulated between the various trades.

    March leave? DND down time?

Remembering back to my BMQ in 2008, we were given a long weekend for Easter.  I can't recall what the deal was for those courses that hadn't earned their weekends yet.  Your course staff will let you know what is going on.  Easter is still long ways away.

Must haves for tour of duty (new to forces)

Camelbacks were issued on my deployment, as were mini-mag lites, and headlamps.  My recommendation, that has nothing to do really with kit, entertainment.  You will get bored, soon, and often.  I don't have any suggestions, as it depends on where you are deployed.

Canadian Forces Aptitude Test (CFAT) [MERGED]

There really isn't a "pass/fail" mark.  Each trade has their own benchmarks.

On the subject of foot ware

The casual shoes are for your first few days of BMQ to wear while you are being hurried around the Mega doing admin stuff.  Wear something you can quickly walk in, and that are comfortable enough that you can stand in one place for hours in a day.  I would not recommend wearing cowboy boots for...

    Discrimination

Have to agree with the others.  People in bigger shoes look at bigger pictures.  I went through BMQ and DP1 to be an infanteer.  Myself  and many others eventually got moved over to transport for our deployment to Afghanistan.  None of us were very happy about it, if we wanted to drive a truck...

    Shampoo at the Canex

You won't be required to have the same set of toiletry brands.  If you need Head and Shoulders bring some with you.  I don't know how much you need, but I would think a normal sized bottle will last at least 4-5 weeks. When and if you get a weekend off after your indoctrination period, you can...

    EI: Entitlement, Right or Insurance

At the end of my TOS, I was told to make sure I apply for EI right away if I expected any problems finding employment.

    EI: Entitlement, Right or Insurance

I was one of those employed in a seasonal job for about 9 years.  Seismic exploration/surveying.  Most of the time, the work didn't exist year round, either due to weather (aka spring break-up, or snow to fall for the mountain work) or the uncertainty of the oil and gas market.  Lay-offs would...

Royal New Zealand Navy to replace 2 aging vessels with Littoral Support Ships

In tomorrow's news: Royal Canadian navy to buy 2 slightly used vessels from New Zealand for a fair price.

The Spam and Scam Superthread- Merged

My aunt received a phone call a couple weeks, apparently from me.  The gyst of it was:  I am your nephew and I have been in a car accident. I really messed up. I am being held in jail for drinking and driving and need bail money. My aunt has some street smarts so started asking questions, and...

    warrior prep

I went through RFT (recruit fitness training) in 2008.  Easiest way to put it, it sucks, but it does get you into shape.  You get out of it, what you put into it.  You will do more PT than you would on a BMQ course.  Typical Day: Reveille.  Breakfast.  Inspection.  As many pushups as you can...

    Continuity of MG capabilities; Vickers-C1/5-C6

Thucydides, it was still being taught when I did my IPSWQ with 3 VP in 2010, but it's not a skill set that seems to be used often.  Someone fresh off the course would know what to do if given the range command.

    Transportation

That depends on if BMQ is being held at the unit, or run at a training center.  If it's being held at the unit, you would be responsible for your own transportation, unless it's serving several small communities, then they may have a shuttle van.  If it's being held at a training center...

    SIC Scale of Issue/Entitlements (merged)

That's what it was back when I was in cadets back in the early 90's.  Everyone wore DEU's except for our QM.  Which made perfect sense, since he was squirreled away down in a dirty legion basement most of the time.

16% of Toronto homeless served in Canadian military

I was homeless last summer.  It had nothing to do with being in the military.  I had a job.  I had the money.  I just wasn't able to find a new place to live after moving.

Survey: Vets "Face Significant Barriers Finding Meaningful Employment"

My entire release was done in 2 weeks, the majority of it during the last week of my VIE.  What SCAN seminar?  Oh yeah, now I remember.  You need to go on a winter survival exercise a month before your release date, so you don't have time to attend any seminars.  Good thing I still had all my...
