    Replacing the Subs

She is, honestly, becoming a menace. I am all for a defence industrial strategy. I am not for trading off defence outputs in exchange for pork barrel politics.

Let me fix the last line of your post for you: “Sure, I set your house on fire, but I want credit for dumping a tea cup of water on the still raging inferno…”

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

And I am pointing out the danger of going full R&D alone. It will not necessarily result in a better Maritime Helicopter outcome than the Cyclone. We aren’t the aviation powerhouse we were in the 1960s and 1970s when we innovated the shit out of that field.

Indirect Fires Modernization Project - C3/M777 Replacement

If you have a celestial almanac with you, you can orient off of the sun . As long as you know GMT, the azimuth of the sun is a known quantity at every point of earth.

At that latitude? Compasses do work that far north (sort of). But you have to be patient. I wonder if they played with other methods of orientation besides Compass and GPS. I dimly remember being taught to orient using a celestial method. I wonder if they brought the books for that along?

    Chinese Military,Political and Social Superthread

Hard grip? I think you would be surprised to the degree that everyone in China is surveilled. Corruption is tolerated as something useful. At any moment, anyone’s (tolerated) corruption scheme can be exposed unless people do what they are told. That, my friend, is a hard grip.

    Chinese Military,Political and Social Superthread

Oh please. Everything is approved by the CCP, until it is not. Corruption is feature, not a bug, which allows the CCP to discipline those who fall out of favour.

Canada opens new residency paths for military recruits, other workers

I was thinking specifically of the aircrew example, yes. There is not a high likelihood we will get former US military people coming to Canada. I have spoken to a number of US exchange officers who would love to stay in Canada after their exchange. If they were to join another military force...

Domestic and Arctic Mobility Enhancement Project

I found that the snow varied between rock hard drift “dunes” that sounded like walking on styrofoam to crusty crystal like snow where you would posthole.

I think it is a general sense that Chinese citizens will act with impunity while abroad, if they get even half a chance. They likely get that from their political leadership.

The councillor was onboard with my thinking- spend the budget on the non-sexy, but necessary basic infrastructure maintenance, first.

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

I was discussing this with one my municipal councillors, last week. I am a bit tired of bike lanes and speed bump announcements. Could we please focus on replacing sewer lines?

The Great Gun Control Debate- 2.0

Maybe, but I doubt it. That is a pretty niche gun. I know there was a Canadianized version, but they have been Prohibited since 2024. If it was a Vector, it raises some interesting questions about that household.
