U.S. troops shoot at Cdn. diplomats' car in Iraq

Why don't we all wait and see what the investigation comes up with. Soldiers, US or not, aren't perfect, so it isn't outside the realm that a mistake was made by them. The Cdn diplomatic team (why did they, including Amb Holms (who wasn't there) suddenly become politicians?) may have made...

Canadian Sea King crashes off Denmark

Oy, don't sprain anything jumping to conclusions. My "Denmark" comment was a tongue-in-cheek reference to our late dispute with the Danes over a piece of rock up North. I shouldn't be suprised that the humour didn't take - it's the Internet, after all.

I'm surprised no one has associated the fact that this occurred off Denmark Coincidence?

    Counter Revolution in Military Affairs

I tend to agree with RecceDG, though you both make very good arguments. I'd like to suggest, though, that waht we need is not the 21stC generals you mention above. As mentioned before, we do quite well at that aspect of warfare. What we need is 21stC Churchills - political will to fight as long...

    The Canadian Rangers Merged Thread

The PCMR were also issued a Winchester 30-30 (I forget the model, '98?) at some stage. A mate of mine had one, issued to a relative, marked with the C-Broad Arrow.

Traditional Beret Colours and thoughts on the tan beret?

I truly wish I had the ref. The Navy Beret pre-WWI (which was not commonly worn, as was the flat hat - IIRC the beret was worn only for certain shore duties) it was black, though often described as Navy Blue. But I'm going by memory. And that's the second thing to go they say... :D

Traditional Beret Colours and thoughts on the tan beret?

Sorry to dredge this up but... George, the Navy had the black beret before there ever was an Armoured Corps. In fact, the reason the Armour wears the black beret is from their Naval (and RTR) roots. Also, berets in the CF, especially the Army, didn't come about 'till WWII (and mostly post...

    Question regarding undress ribbons

I don't know for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me if most of those with CMM were awarded both the OMM and MMM previously.

    Are We Wasting Our Effort?

Cannonfodder, Something you should consider doing is a study of terrorists and terrorism. You are patently wrong if you think economic disadvantage creates terrorists - the 19 who conducted the 9/11 attacks are instructive. A terrorist is made by a grievance and an ideology. The soldiers are...

    Are We Wasting Our Effort?

Jeez, three posts and a clear expert (unable to use the spacebar, but still an expert - clearly). Son, your head is firmly in a box of preconceptions. Fair enough - you are neither alone, nor on the side most locked to those preconceived notions. Piper is a young Rupert, in need of guidance...

Shane Doan Sues Liberal MP Denis Coderre

"Allegedly insulted" and he was exhonorated. "Truth, Duty, Valour...Not Getting Caught" indeed. I'm glad my time left in the CF is short enough that I won't be faced with having to shoot you "pour encouragre les autres."

France threatening nuclear response if attacked by state sponsored terrorists...

The Beirut CIA station chief was murdered by hanging. He wasn't skinned. The story of the Soviets was that they assassinated some key Hezbolla figures in retaliation for the kidnapping of their citizen(s) and the effect achieved the desired result.

    Are We Wasting Our Effort?

Yep Cannonfodder. We can do so much more without risk. Afghanistan is going to be the rock on which our colonial ship founders.  ::)

    New CF Fitness Policies Coming

You're good 'till the end of the PER reporting period (31 March) and good as far as the CDS's direction goes in the CANFORGEN. Unless you got Exempt on the EXPRES test, and you aren't in an Army unit that does the BFT annually, you'll have to do it again at some point in the next reporting year...

15 Jan 06 Glyn Berry Killed, 3 Others Injured in Afghanistan

pbi, I think there have been a couple of other CDN diplomats killed abroad (not counting at least one I know of who was murdered as a result of a robbery), though that goes back over 50 years - one in Egypt in '56 and another elsewhere, I forget. I think it was an article today by Sean Maloney...

Canadians seen as Americans in Afghanistan

Just a fact quibble - the largest Muslim countries (by Muslim population) aren't Arab, and the largest, Indonesia, is a democracy (of sorts, still in infancy).

    Afghan Roto in Aug 06

Crap - if I get two medals I'll have another uneven row. If I got one I'd even out the top row, and I could retire. Now I'll have to stay in to get two more to even out the new row. Please tell me it's not two gongs!! And yes Mark, it's all about the bling. I remember the guy back in 1980 who...
