    Wearing issued boots in civy

The new pusser black winter boots are outstanding. They are comfortable, warm, with a good sole and are essentially a civilian pattern boot. nobody would even question it. you can order them through Logistik.

Royal New Zealand Navy to replace 2 aging vessels with Littoral Support Ships

Better how? They want to consolidate MCM, underwater suvey (route survey), and clearance diving from outdates not purpose built ships, into a common, newer vessel that they tag with the sexy term Littoral. We do all of those things currently. If we re-designed the KIN class as "Littoral support...

The Dark Years before the Years of Darkness - Are we facing worse times?

On the surface, I find most Canadians are publically (and I think, genuinely) supportive of the military and particularly the members. What they really want though, is a small, relatively inexpensive force that can go away on benign peacekeeping operations, disaster recovery and the like...

When do you wear the pink(subdued) one?

    Sextant

The only time I used a sextant for distance was during an exchange with the RNR in 1991. We were doing mechanical mine sweeping and closed to about 20 x. Stuarts distance meter is impractical at that distance. It did take two people though but it was highly accurate as they kept tables of angles...

    SHADS....Where did it originate?

Although to consider yourself to still be a reservist after 18 consecutive years of full time service is a bit of misnomer. Funcitonally, and in keeping with the NDA, you are very much in the regular force

Derelict Port de la Reine and the Port Quebec

They look a little nicer than when I was last on de la Reine. I think that was 95 or 96, just before she was paid off. I remember wondering how I could make off with some peice of the ship for posterity. Pretty sure there were no plank holders around looking to lay claim to parts of her. The...

    HMCS Charlottetown taking greenies

Do you miss those days of sitting on an open bridge, with a wind screen that came up as high as your belly button, watching the bow plow into a big wave to catch it right in your face?  ;) Or perhaps walking up the ladder with your supper from the galley on the Stbd breezeway only to have some...

HMCS Preserver smashes into dock - 4 Nov 2011

It is kind of a colloquial MARS term. The intent is to learn how to drive the ship not to actually "bash" the jetty. The idea should be to stop just short of that. Nobody ever likes to be the subject of the converstion in the Wardroom that starts with "I had no idea what he was thinking about...

New RCN rain gear being made in Winnipeg

so, my impression is that this is to replace the black plastic rain coat and I didn't think it was to replace the canary suit. Seems like a pretty pricey rain suit for walking about town.

    Status on Victoria-class Submarines?

There is no doubt that a submarine is a valuable asset when when conducting certain types of operations but what is needed in the Arctic is presence and a sub is not the ideal vessel for that. We need to exert Canadian authority over the area but more importantly, we need to be seen to be...

    A Canadian White Ensign proposal

Clearly it's time we reverted to the 'Historically important' period between 1968 an 1988 and reacquire our CF green uniforms and traditional and happy CF rank structure of corporal, sergeant, major and colonel. Why give any consideration to the history and tradition of a service that existed...

    Sea Service Insignia (SSI) [Merged]

How is what possible? Not having enough sea time to even be close? A lot of the MWS west coast sailing is day sails, in and out of ports, doing lots of shiphandling for alongside and departures but doesn't count. Great experience but no accumulation for SSI.

Applying to Reserve unit in another province

You will find that recruiting across the formation for almost all trades is quite limited this year. As mentioned, moving somewhere to join the reserves doesn't make a lot of sense. If you're that keen to join, you should get in the Reg force.

    Sea Service Insignia (SSI) [Merged]

In some weird way, I feel somewhat proud of the fact that I managed to get MWS command qualified and I'm not anywhere close enough to get one of these badges. In fact I will never be getting one. I assume that a good majority of my sea time is in the 'doesn't count' category.

I found this document in an e-mail from the NOA. It was described as the replacement for Neptune's Notes. It certainly is more updated.

AOR Replacement & the Joint Support Ship (Merged Threads)

I think that replacing the oldest ships in the fleet is positive news, although most would be concerned about whether this announcement will actually result in ships in the water. I think our government (all editions) has been famous for making announcements that don't actually turn into...

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

In Calgary at least, the connection between the ship and the city is quite impressive. The interest in the ship often goes beyond the local naval community into the community at large. That connection simply did not exist under the previous ship names of rivers and bays. I think it was brilliant...
