CDN Hostage James Loney Rescued by SAS in Iraq

http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2006/03/23/canadian_role060323.html This story tells some of the tale. If you read between the lines, JTF2 is/was likely working/embedded with SAS and US Special ops. I say likely because as civilians we do not and should not know, we can only speculate...

Afghan man faces death penalty for converting to Christianity

The religious culture in Afghanistan I think frowns heavily on people doing that, and although I do not support what they do, I understand that what we believe to be important, may not be in another Country. I think there may be some other issues going on here that we may not be aware of. (he...

    Army.ca ranking system (new idea)

Yes George, I do sometimes contradict myself, here's my reasons why; I'm Blond (and greying), I'm a shiftworker (what day is it...a day off) and I'm a Dutch/Canadian...need I say more >:D Gnplummer :cdn:

    touchy topic may offend some........

There are some very valid points here, My2cents, After scouring through news articles and googling percentages, I've come to the conclusion (as other replies have indicated) that the average civilian is pretty naive to most things Armed Forces, they are just following blindly a cause they know...

    Army.ca ranking system (new idea)

Curious, you guys just built up a whole bunch of points just talking about the rank system ;) ;D All kidding aside, I believe someone who truly cares about and enjoys writing/replying to posts, wouldn't focus on points, but rather discussing issues that we deem important, so from that...

    A Black Mark

What scares the heck out of me is that everytime this sort of thing happens, no one ever would have expected so and so do be able to do this. He was such an outstanding person in the Community yada yada. I can just imagine the sheer number of people who are doing it and not getting caught...

    touchy topic may offend some........

Springroll, You hit the nail right on the head there. So many people in such a hurry to point the finger. Soldiers are sometimes easy targets for negative comments such as what was experienced there. Funny, but when I immigrated to Canada I wanted to learn English quickly and I fell in love...

Canadian Public Opinion Polls on Afghanistan

I have to chuckle when I read comments in the newspaper about Canadians that are against our mission in A-stan. The words that come to mind as I read are: naive, uneducated, treehugger, braindead, head in the sand....you get the drift. I believe the majority of these people have absolutely no...

Well, the PM went to the 'Wild West'

Well, ordinarily I would not compliment a politician, but in Harper's case I make an exception. He did well to go there and show our troops support. Leadership is what our Government lacks most (IMHO) so to see this was very good. The other leaders...well I'll keep my thoughts to myself about...

    Offr-NCO-NCM Relationships

A bit off topic...but; I remember a thing our Squadron used to do when New Troop Officers would come to us while we were on Fall-ex. They would arrive on a Helicopter and would be dropped off a few clicks away from camp. Then once we had word they would soon arrive, we would exchange...

Is there any hope for a relationship??

I was in that exact situation in Germany in 1991. I was constantly going to Guncamps in the run-up to CAT91. My wife decided I wasn't spending enough time with her and found a playmate. We had a couple of suicides in the Regiment that year related to spousal problems, and the Col was very...

    Offr-NCO-NCM Relationships

Greetings, I've had both positive and some negative experiences with Officers while I was in the army. In  2 Svc Bn, we had a Col. who loved to move at night constantly during Ex's and then work all during the day, dig trenches yadda yadda, but he kinda forgot about what happens to a soldier's...

    Canadian Military Prison

Speaking of Generals, what is the ratio these days? When I got out in '95, it was something ridiculous like 125 Generals for 48,000 troops, is it still this bad? And I also hope that there is a big shake up at NDHQ. I am bitter because I had to spend almost a year there (a low point in my caeer...

Canada converts Sea Kings for battlefield role with SCTF

IMHO an excellent stopgap solution. Why not use what we have while we have it. I checked out some of the links from previous pages to familiarize myself with the Cyclone...I don't want to offend anyone, but it looks like a VIP passenger chopper. I guess looks can be deceiving. I also like the...

    Hillier Arming Canada For War

Any kind of new or used equipment is better than nothing. Certainly it is a step in the right direction. I believe we should be there for two reasons; We should try to ensure that the Al-Qaida training camps and the Taliban don't resurface, and this will require a sustained Operation spanning...

    Armoured Reconnoissance questions

    Confused

Hey Reg, I'm curious..why in such a hurry, you seem awfully anxious. I see your modicon is a "door knocker". What are you shooting for in the military...all the way? I hope you get your call soon, the army likes people with extra energy. Good luck bud, Gnplummer :cdn:

4 dead in Afghan protests over cartoon of prophet

I have tried to go on an Islamic forum to try to find out why the reaction is so strong toward any criticism or humour by Westerners (the rules of the forums are so stringent that any criticism of Islam is immediately turned into a ban)directed toward anything Islam, but at the same time it...

Boot cleaning / polishing / care of

I've actually heard of people putting a heavy coat of polish on damaged areas and then putting the boots in the oven until polish gets glazed over, filling the cracks and such, in effect, baking the polish on. I have never done this, and it sounds a little hokey. Any one ever try this method?

Why does everyone suggest I avoid being a NCM?

I guess I can provide an example of what an NCM could get after a career in the service. The average wage in the Manufacturing sector here in Eastern Ontario is $25-$32/hr. (top level process operator) In my plant alone there are 7 ex-military NCM's  from various backgrounds. We work...
