There is in fact a series of diagrams inside the covers on it's construction and use. I can say truthfully that during my time at CFSCE I have seen candidates still mess up the assembly after two periods of instruction and a demo.

You are in fact correct. All in Petawawa late 60's early 70's. The tac signs were varied a lot. It's hard to really nail down a uniform pattem.
