    Help identifying CA brassard

Thanks! That would make sense since I believe he played an Adjutant-General role of some sort as major at Camp Borden.

    Help identifying CA brassard

Been sorting through stuff in my basement and came across this brassard. It was my Grandfather's so Great War or later vintage. I'm guessing Second World War as he had a series of staff jobs during that one. Any help identifying it would be much appreciated.

Government hints at boosting Canada’s military spending

Was reading George Blackburn's Where The Hell Are The Guns last winter and remember thinking that trilogy would make a great Band of Brothers type TV series about a Canadian soldier from training through to victory. I was also struck by the story of George Browne being captured at Dieppe and...

    British Military Current Events

Great book, read it earlier this year. He really seemed to be the central figure among the hostages. I was struck by how little, if any, training seemed to go into preparing him for the job, even though he was armed. RIP.

The RCAF's Next Generation Fighter (CF-188 Replacement)

There is political beauty in that as well in that neither AB nor QC really lose out.

The RCAF's Next Generation Fighter (CF-188 Replacement)

Is it just Cold Lake or Bagotville as well? And how to resolve? Is there any capacity at existing flying stations more hospitable locations? Winnipeg/Trenton/Greenwood? I'm assuming places like Comox, Goose Bay or North Bay (assuming the latter could still support flying) wouldn't be any more...

The RCAF's Next Generation Fighter (CF-188 Replacement)

Back to the topic at hand, a few questions about options. I get that we’re only contractually committed to the first batch of 16 F-35s but presumably that’s not a practical number to stop at as it’s just enough to equip a squadron plus. So assuming we were going to go with a mixed fleet...

    British Military Current Events

Always remember summer Cub camps in Lahr in the early 70s when the units would take turns sending their field kitchens to feed us all. Great food too, except for the year the Van Doos served liver. When I was in university and working for Scouts Canada at the 83 World Jamboree in Kananaskis...

    Replacing the Subs

At the risk of going off topic, how does this square with the St. Laurents and the follow on classes up to the 280s? Weren't they all, at least until the 280s, primarily ASW assets? And how does your definition of a destroyer mesh with the classic definition of a cruiser, which when it comes to...

High Speed Train Coming?-split from boosting Canada’s military spending"

HSR will never happen, at least not in my lifetime. Not that it shouldn't. Certainly in the corridor it could make a lot of sense, especially from an environmental point of view (it will always need a government subsidy...I think that's true even with the most successful HSR projects). The...

High Speed Train Coming?-split from boosting Canada’s military spending"

"Caretaker" mode exists in Ontario during elections, ostensibly to protect the civil service from being dragged into political gamesmanship. Although, as we're seeing right now, it's not entirely clear what limits actually apply to the sitting government. I don't believe the concept exists...

    Replacing the Subs

And didn't the RN maintain a submarine squadron out of Halifax post war until we acquired Grilse?

    My mistake, Rainbow was purchased.

    Replacing the Subs

Not counting the two the government of BC bought at the start of the First World War there were HMC Submarines Rainbow and Grilse, both on loan from the USN during the 60s and into the 70s.

    Canada's tanks

As I recall, for a while after the move south 4CMBG wasn't even called a brigade group but a battle group.

Government hints at boosting Canada’s military spending

Politics was certainly a big part of it, but I think we would struggle to find anything in the way of a coherent or consistent approach in the decades since Trudeau's cuts to the Army. Picton closed out with the reduction to nil strength of the Canadian Guards but all the other garrisons...
