    Alternate for the CIC

I guess there is no good reason that we are associated with the military at all, as cadets, or Officers. Except that our aims are to stimulate an interest in the CF, so having real live members of the CF there usually helps with that. As for the NCM argument, we‘ve been over that... CIC are...

Reserves and the RCMP (and Other Civilian Police)

Quite correct, Gunner. Our job is very specific in being the staff DND/CF provides to administer the Cadet programs, as detailed in the NDA Sec 46. RCMP members are a valuable addition to the CIC ranks.

    US is tresspassing on Mars

It‘s not Yemen you have to worry about. It‘s the freakin‘ Martians! Look at this! No wonder the Rover keeps ‘losing contact‘ with Mission Control ;)

    Your Beer Brand of Choice

Beer is a lovely thing. Domestic, my pick would be Molson Dry Import, it‘s all about Henieken (and no, I can‘t spell). Micro-brew - my fav - Big Rock beers in Calgary (especially Trad, Grasshopper, and Canvasback Ale), and then the English Pale Ale from Granville Island Brewery. GOOD BEER! :D

    Spirits.

Hmm... all depends on what I‘m drinking for. A good tawny port is great for celebrating. Goes good with a fine cigar, as well :D But for run-of-the-mill hard liqour, give me scotch.

Quantity over Quality in the Reserves

Alex, he might be a MCpl in the LER Cadet Corps ;) But not a chance he‘s a MCpl primary reservist. Not a chance. Correct me if I‘m wrong, but don‘t you have to be 17 to enrol into any component of the CF, anyway?

Parachutist wings from cadets on my PRes or RegF uniform

Give it a week... Sylena is getting the new site up and running. Different vibe here, though. I very much enjoy the change of pace :D

    Alternate for the CIC

CIC are specialist officers employed to run the government funded youth program. Yes, we should be commissioned officers. Yes, we should have a higher standard. Yes, given our limited recruiting base, that standard is going to be very difficult not only to attain, but to define in the first...

Leadership in the Cadet Snr NCO role

Jason, very much agreed. Some officers do take that to the extreme... and yes, by providing the resources, I do mean giving them a push, seeing how far they get, and the re-evaluating the situation to see how we can improve the process and results. That leadership needs to start at the top...

Changes, needed fixes in Cadets (merged)

Right... good way to shape youth into model citizens... show them that violence is the best way to correct them  We‘ve had the CHAP discussion before. It‘s not a verb. It‘s a program. Anything that is wrong now that CHAP is here (and it‘s been five years - get over it!), was...

Boot cleaning / polishing / care of

Elbow grease is the way to go. My boots never looked as good as they did on BOQ, because we spent a couple of hours on them every night as we studied.

    glases in the army

Darn sticky computer buttons, I suppose. I‘ve gotta say, the funniest thing I ever saw when on an aircrew surivial ex as an Air Cadet were the junior cadets bringing their contacts, and having them freeze in the saline overnight. I‘d recommend glasses, but that‘s just my personal opinion. No...

Why haul around kit if you don‘t have to? I‘m sure you‘ll be able to take your laundry home ;)

What do you mean by ‘bring off base‘? Like a walking-out dress? Curious topic.

Leadership in the Cadet Snr NCO role

Franko, I enjoy you. The largest problem of leadership goes back to the entire "if you slow down, they will stop" principle. Officers need to remember (especially the junior ones) that we are officers. Officer = office. There is absolutely no reason why your Chief can‘t have their staff of...

Changes, needed fixes in Cadets (merged)

Unit COs need to be held more accountable. The thing is, no one in a unit is going to phone the ACO and say "Capt Bloggins doesn‘t wear his 3Bs properly!". If your staff isn‘t cohesive, your unit will fall apart. I think Unit COs should need to be in closer contact with their advisors, Det...

Changes, needed fixes in Cadets (merged)

I‘m glad you asked. No, starting from the top isn‘t always the best way, but when you are trying to create a culture, it flows from the top. Let‘s start here. Yes, the CIC run a youth program. That is our MOC. However, too many officers see their cap badge as a flag of convenience. If they...

Changes, needed fixes in Cadets (merged)

I‘ve worked with some great RegF and PRes Chiefs in my short time... CWO Woodcock, CWO Lemon... inspiring gentleman. Jason, I agree - ex-cadets should not go back to their unit right away. And COs need to exercise way more discretion when sponsoring ex-cadets into the CIC as soon as they age...

Changes, needed fixes in Cadets (merged)

Carter, what do you know about CIC training? As an officer in the CIC branch, I would love to see us brought to a higher, more ‘military‘ standard. But we have facts to face. The CIC isn‘t glamourous. We‘re entitled to 23 paid days a year, and most of us do 10 days a month of time. In my...

Why does Canada need an army?

Interesting thread! As for ‘another organization‘ able to assist in natural disasters... if you look at the US model, they have the National Guard - something we don‘t have. We just have one CF, that goes anywhere, anytime. Would the US, or another nation, protect us in the event of an attack...
