Major Sam Meckbach (repeated from commando.org)

Sam was a true officer and gentlemen. I worked with him at Pacific Region Cadets and for a time my wife and I were neighbours of Sam and Marj in Esquimalt. Throughout he was a good friend, mentor and confidante. I will miss him. :salute:

Submitting afghanistan photos to military museums - OPSEC concerns

Being a volunteer in a local military museum, and actively searching for artifacts for our Afghanistan display, I can't say I ever considered the OPSEC issues of any donated photos (probably since we haven't received any yet). Perhaps I am being naive, but I would have expected that anything...

    What's YOUR Birthday Song?

Sh-Boom Sh Boom - the Crew Cuts http://youtu.be/Q9G0-4TWwew Yeah, I'm that old . . . (but all things considered, somehow appropriate)

What book are you reading now?

"The Civil War" by Shelby Foote (three volumes). Just ordered a Civil War atlas off EBay to complement it and make following the battles a bit easier.

Military memoribilia apraiser - Vancouver BC

We will often take items like this from our museum (Canadian Scottish Regiment) to the Command Post in Victoria (1306 Government Street (250) 383-4421). They seem to be able to give pretty good valuation on historical military items. Its not Vancouver, but its close.

Cold Warrior Question - Who Would Have Won?

Being a basic "cold warrior" (served 1970 - 2002) I have a question that I have never really been able to sort out - how would a land battle in Europe between the Warsaw Pact and NATO have played out? I've read the fictional accounts, but what I'm really looking for is some technical analysis...

When did batmen fall out of use?

When I arrived in the Strathcona's in 1975 they were gone. I seem to remember hearing there were batmen earlier in the decade, not one per officer, but one to "bat" for a number of the living in officers. But that's a hazy memory.

    iPad 2

Also Quickoffice, available for iPad 1 but I would imagine would work on iPad 2. Haven't used it much but so far good for reading MS Office documents.

1980s combat uniform pockets / Mess Kit accuracy

I don't remember exactly what I carried, but I do remember "losing" things in my pockets. There were so many, between the pants, shirt and jacket keys, etc, could just disappear.

    Definition of "table top exercises"

"A tabletop exercise involves senior staff and other key personnel in an informal group discussion centered on a hypothetical scenario." If this isn't sufficient PM me and let see if we can figure out what you are looking for.

    Cold War Memories

First Cold War memory? Air raid (?) drills in First Avenue School in Ottawa, circa 1960. Going into the basement and sitting on the floor. I'm not quite sure what that was supposed to do but we did it anyways. And lots more memories over the years.

WW2 Canadian Army Formation Badge Question

Thanks for the prompt response. Any idea why this badge would be worn on the epaulette and by a sergeant who so far as we know was always on regimental duty? We have not been able to find any other examples of this badge being worn by other members of the regiment.

WW2 Canadian Army Formation Badge Question

The Canadian Scottish Regiment Museum recently had a WW2 battledress blouse donated. It belonged to one of our sergeants who served overseas with the Regiment during the war. The blouse has a formation badge located on the left epaulette, but we have been unable to identify what it signifies, or...

Col. Pat Stogran, CAN's New Vets Ombudsman

My perspective on this was that while there was a very important message here, the Ombudsman squandered the opportunity to get the nation's attention (if that was even possible) with a poorly-staged press conference. I can't blame the participants for being inarticulate or nervous in front of...

tie strings & the fit of combat uniforms (Split: Need for a new Army dress uniform)

Or its a hangover from the original combat shirt where the FN C1 mags fit in the chest pockets and the draw strings kept them (sort of) tight to your body and they didn't beat you death when you ran.
