Question about joining as a Medic

Hey Hatchetman, If you wanna be a civvie medic in Ontario then just take either the 2 year community college program, the Loyalist part time program, or the 52 week CTS school program (private) or the CTC 16 month program (private).  That way you won't have any worries.  Sure you'll have to pay...

Just curious why the army bases would be protected by civvies? Well like I said, there is a difference between air force base FF's and municipal.  It has to do with call volume and the types of calls.  I understand that you can "potentially" have all the calls that you mention, but the reality...

Both.  There is no other job i'd rather do....but I also know most wouldn't be there if it wasn't for the money, benefits, etc.  I WOULD do it for 1/2 the money, but not in the military...not at my age. Plus FFing in the military is completely different than municiple.  And I prefer municiple.

I wasn't mislead.  Most of the civvie direct entries for FF trade have their NFPA seals...the others are OT's.  It's very difficult to get in from civvie side.  And so it should be. I understand that you have a similar life and there is plenty of life experience to be had.  But overall, I just...

Buddyhfx, thanks for your reply. I also cannot understand why a secretary would make the same money as an infantry soldier...this is what i'm starting to learn about the system that i'm not much impressed with.  But this is the way it is...by rank as you say.  I disagree with your point re...

Halifax's salary reflects the cost of living, as do most cities.  I know all cities in southern ontario start at 45-50.  Same with Vancouver...47k.  You're right...smaller towns are less, but it's all relative. Wow...you have some wicked experience!  And I do hand it to you guys...you work for...

oh yes, what's the status with specialist pay for FF now?  Has it been implemented?  Or will it?  I'm just trying to debate things as i thought that i'd be able to make a decent living for my family but it's not looking like it anymore!  Like are meals included at the bases at mess halls for at...

aesop, thanks for the explanations.  Wow, so pension is deducted from that pay scale wage....ouch.  I don't know how you do it!  Surely a MCPL makes more but still, in this day and age I can see it being very difficult to make a living on less than $40k.  I don't think $30k is alot and I do know...

Hey Banman, how do you like industrial FFing?  Would you rather move to a city dept?  The CF min. contract for Military FF is now FIVE years.  And the resume doesn't get as stacked as you might think.  Surely the CF looks fantastic on the resume but they certificates are not much more than...

You make strong points.  Could you please explain what 'leave travel assistance' and 'service flights' are?  Also, with regard to the pay scale...whatever monthly wages it shows..do they take money out of that for pension....or is that minus taxes basically what goes in your pocket?  If they...

65 from the recruiting centre...Kincanucks posted the numbers.  It doesn't include OT's so it's all from civvie street or reserves to reg.  It's good numbers as it's typically 20-30 direct entry per year from what i've heard. Heatwave, you've been in for a while...you must really love it.  Is...

    FY 06/07 numbers for NCM

It looks like Infantry R22R has been reduced to 350, that is, unless those positions were simply filled. Also, those numbers eg. FIRE FTR (65)....are these simply for Direct Entry...or would they include Occupational Transfers as well.  So say it was a 50/50 allotment, would this essentially...

    FY 06/07 numbers for NCM

Additionally, I see that some new trades have opened, but also some trades that were open HAVE GROWN....for instance, Med Tech went up to 163.  Is it possible for these trades to shrink JUST AS FAST?  I mean, other then filling from enrollment, can they TAKE AWAY numbers the same way as they...

    Firefighter

Oh it's forsure closed.  But usually opens up for a short time (2 weeks) every year or so...with the exception of this year so far...but it's still early in the fiscal year.  So it could open when they want it to.

If anyone is wondering I found out it is a 5 year contract. Doesn't seem like anyone is interested in the trade of FIRE FTR.  Good thing all those infantry spots are open :)

Question about joining as a Medic

Hey RogueMedic thanks for your reply!  Wow, seems like quite a journey.  Thanks for sharing your experiences as it has definitely helped me.  I have only been thinking about Medic as a "backup" but my heart is in firefighting and that's where it will stay...I will wait and wait and wait if I...
