Not that I don't enjoy a good Ocdr/Ncdt slap fight...
The "thirteen year" comment comes from the old SE/SSE (Short Engagement / Short Service Engagement) that we officers signed on under back before the Variable Initial Engagement (VIE) which was, unsurprisingly, 13 years (for the most part...
Yeah, everyone involved hates the feast/famine way of doing it, and SCSC was such a step in the right direction... maybe the 24B $ pricetag scared off the government (the DRP has a very tentative budget of around 8B)
What you've just described is (was) the SCSC project. Except rather than upgrading every new ship with the latest technology, the ships would have been built in flights of 4ish and then upgraded for the next flight.
Also some of you are seriously downplaying the difficulty and risks involved...
I'd just like to further clear up some misconceptions. Option C, which is to buy into an existing program includes those "Canadian" ships being built in Canada.
Furthermore the option of getting Burkes comes up every time a Destroyer replacement project is created, and this one is no different...
I was in error when I posted in the sub thread about the DRP coming up alongside the SCSC program. I've done a little digging through DGMFD and the CID and it looks like DRP has swallowed SCSC whole. It’s still quite a confusing project, as some of the documentation looks like it was lifted...
Absolutely. There is enough experience left in Canada in regards to shipbuilding and designing that we don't have to look off the shelf.
The DRP is still very much a paper project, and given its relative newness and lack of traction in Ottawa it is likely to stay that way for a while. The big...
Just as an FYI for those keeping tabs on this thread, I was recently in Ottawa for the Navy's annual C4ISR Conference, and during a presentation by DGMFD/DMRS 9 (The Sub Project guys) they addressed the issue of buying a new sub class as ludicrous, and that all cost projections done show that it...
Could be? Sure. There was a plan originally to have the last batch of CPFs with a a VLS cell inserted in the centre of the ship. It would be very expensive, however.
Not really. They do not launch in the same fashion and and the guidance is radically different. It would require many more...
I'm not surprised. The information that was provided to me was from the class desk in Ottawa, so I'm sure there was a disconnect with reality somewhere.
Depending on how able you are to comment, whats your unofficial view of the work left to be done?
I did exactly this. I went from a reserve NCI-OP (OS) to a MARE NCdt. It was all organized through my local recruiting centre, and I managed to leverage my (albeit very limited) reserve experience to help in my application to RMC. At that Junior level, none of your reserve training will directly...
I know you are pissed off because you wanted to stay in Victoria but got Halifax, but guess what, we don't always get what we want and the needs of the forces come before your own. Furthermore the east has a lot of great port opportunities, including Europe.
While we are making up statistics...
Not a new gun but an upgraded version of the Bofors.
All the new kit that's being put on is 1/2 to 1/3 the size of the old stuff. So you can maximize internal space without knocking down bulkheads.
URL of the PMO Felex site has already been posted
Its a little more contentious than that...
What he was announcing is known as the FELEX Project (Frigate Life Extension) and has been around for years. Most of the work package will be done by different contractors or FMF's during extended refits and slowly rolled out throughout the fleet. Some of the Felex projects have already been...
So one naval pers (on this board) has some reservations about giving Field Allowance full time and suddenly we are all whiners?
Please. It seems you may have an axe to grind in regard to the Navy but don't paint us all with such a broad brush. I've always thought that our Army colleagues should...
This is for the most part correct, although replacement of the SHINPADS combat data system is only a small portion of the CCS overhaul and will be done to all ships in class. And as has already been pointed out by Ex-Dragoon, many of these initiatives have already been done as Pre-Felex fits...
I've seen a few pictures and video from various sources (the periscope one, a few from A-Channel Victoria) but I'm specifically referring to anything from the CF-18's that would lend credence to Cronicbny's assertion that laser guided bombs sank the Huron.
Also mostly because I'd really like to...
Any luck getting a hold of these videos / pictures? Everything I've read/seen in the media and people I've talked to onboard the REGINA state that the Huron was sunk by a second volley of shots from Algonquin's 76mm and that bombs were NOT dropped on the Huron.
Wish I could find the slides from the last technical brief on the sub programme.
Long story short is that Victoria is well (2 years?) into a EDWP and hopefully should be done late this year or early next. She will go on to weapons trials and be the first Sub to be weapons certified. From then...
AFAIK, There were no Harpoons fired upon the Huron. The plan was to engage it with Sea Sparrow Missiles operating in surface mode, but I don't know how many firing serials there was before it sank. Apparently (unsurprisingly) the damage done to the ship by these SA Missiles was negligible.
Its...
