I worked recruiting for a little bit.  I would hit a couple of of high schools each week for presentations. The problem that I found was that the students didn't think of the military in a good way.  They also didn't of the military in a bad way.  It's that they didn't think of the military at all.

I'm not too much of a keen kit guy (other than waterproof ruck liners), but for my money the best piece of kit (that I didn't see on your list) is the fleece sleeping bag liner.  It's worth every penny for my money.  I only wish I got more rack in the field so I can use it more.

I have an older issue bivy bag and I just carry around a unhooked coat-hanger and hang it around the opening.  Works pretty well when you're changing your skiivies in your sack.  You can also hook the coat hanger back up to hang up your combats at night.

It's arguably tougher for the cadets.  They do a three week pre-course before the B Para, to get them into shape, etc.  Three weeks at the CPC was enough for me.

HAHAHA re: Yeoman's post on the 2nd page about the kid who falls asleep in cow crap. I can vouch for that story.  I was an instructor on that course and the kid told it me first hand the next day. That kid was hilarious.  After that I couldn't look at him without laughing.

I do like the idea of an 18 month contract. Have it for the kids who want to make a few bucks out of highschool, see the world, etc.  We already have a contract that is similar right now - it's for the reserves when they go on tour.  I think the 18 month contract would work for some missions...
