No no, not at all. I'm just talking about refuelling our transport aircraft, which wouldn't make sense for us.

    OP Boxtop

Air refuelling transport aircraft doesn't make sense for Canada. When you factor in delivery costs (ie, a whole other airplane and all it's associated costs), fuel from a tanker easily costs 15x what it does on the ground. Then there would be the colossal cost of training and maintaining the...

    RCAF aircrew shortage

You missed the point. It’s not about getting a break, it’s about being penalized no matter what if they want to keep doing their jobs. It takes away their options and forces their hand. If they do another flying tour, they don’t have the luxury of sliding over to another squadron flying the...

    RCAF aircrew shortage

It affects their second tour though, and greatly affects their decision to stay. With training delays and tour lengths these days, the majority of pilots on orphan fleets will be forced to sign a 3 year RR that goes past their 7 if they want another flying tour, which in turn forces them to sign...

Op IMPACT: CAF in the Iraq & Syria crisis

That's how it works for transient aircrew (C-17s, Js etc...), Kuwait days for days in Kuwait, Iraq days for days in Iraq. Do The Aurora and Tanker guys on CFTPOs not operate that way?

"So You Want To Be A Pilot" Merged Thread 2002 - 2018

Is that something new (or very old and not done anymore)? They will accept your application in your final year with the caveat that you must have a degree before you can get an offer (that's what I did), but I've certainly never heard of the CF giving a DEO offer before the applicant has a...

All things LASIK surgery (aircrew/other -- merged)

My bad, didn't see the banner. I just saw bad info being passed and jumped on it.

All things LASIK surgery (aircrew/other -- merged)

That info is over a decade old and no longer valid. There are no min/max heights anymore, your body is measured by a computer to determine what (if any) aircraft you fit in. The average height for males in Canada is 5'8.5", being 5'7" is a non issue (it's body proportions that count anyways, not...

"So You Want To Be A Pilot" Merged Thread 2002 - 2018

Aircrew selection is done prior to joining, if you fail, your application for pilot doesn't continue (you can still continue the application for your other trade choices). You can attempt aircrew selection up to 3 times, and each must be at least 1 year apart.

"So You Want To Be A Pilot" Merged Thread 2002 - 2018

Being accepted as a pilot, no matter what entry plan, is very competitive. I'm not aware of anyone failing yet (and certainly not 60%), maybe they were talking about aircrew selection, which has a 30-40% pass rate. That has nothing to do with Seneca though, it's part of the recruitment process...

2Lt pay incremental after 5 years in the rank

My bad, I thought you were asking what rule prevents them from getting all the IPCs, not if there was a rule allowing them to. Back when pilot training was taking years, you could actually request a higher IPC through the "career manager" for untrained pilots. As far as I know it wasn't based...

2Lt pay incremental after 5 years in the rank

2Lt pay incremental after 5 years in the rank

As the CBI mentions above, DEO 2Lts don't move up incentives like other CF members. They are limited to 2 incentives, and only if their training is delayed.

2Lt pay incremental after 5 years in the rank

I was a DEO 2Lt for 5 years back when the wait for pilot training was ridiculous. You are only entitled to 2 pay increases.

Time away from home for Pilots, ACSOs, and Aerospace Control Officers.

He does bring up a very good point, there is a whole lot of outdated info on this site, and updated info isn't being posted because people are constantly being slagged for posting it or asking for it. It's not fair to compare the nature of our planet to a career as an Air Force pilot. The...

Time away from home for Pilots, ACSOs, and Aerospace Control Officers.

They're right, it depends. There are too many variables to give you any meaningful answer, as it will be different for every single aircraft you could fly. I'm on the air mobility side of things and I was away from home about 250 days in the past year, while my buddy is an instructor and is...

    DART going to Nepal, 2015

Without going into specifics, the C-17s aren't carrying max fuel nor max cargo. They only need enough gas to get there and then back to India (only a few hours of flying, plus reserves) and their payload is limited by how much gas they needed for the long legs there. Still a bit over the current...

    DART going to Nepal, 2015

Not if you stage out of somewhere close by (which is the case here). The boots on the ground are tenting it, if the crew is on the ground in Nepal for more than a few hours they are having a very, very bad day. Crew rest in Nepal will mean sleeping on the jet... Biggest hurdle is just getting...

RUMINT of Canada wanting more C-17's

We are short of experienced pilots, we are absolutely swimming with new ones. We are hiring a huge number of pilots each year and the training system is finally working properly, but the squadrons can't absorb them as fast as they are trained. Waiting 12+ months for an OTU is common these days...
