GREENWOOD — Ken Brown couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw the numbers on his Super 7 lottery ticket.
Mr. Brown, an avionics technician at 14 Wing Greenwood, and 21 of his colleagues won $2.5 million in the lottery.
He and two others, Mike Fallis and Richard Gosse, picked up the cheque at Atlantic Lottery’s headquarters in Moncton on Thursday.
"I’m ecstatic, shocked, numb," Mr. Brown said in a phone interview from Moncton. "I’m waiting to see the numbers in my bank account to have it really sink in."
All 22 winners work in 413 Search and Rescue Squadron at the Annapolis Valley air force base. Each will take home $113,636.36.
The group of friends has been buying lottery tickets for 10 years.
The winner, an instant-pick ticket, was purchased at a kiosk in the Greenwood Mall.
Mr. Brown said he stopped at the Ultramar Station in Windsor to check the tickets and found out he was a winner.
"I thought I was seeing things," he said. "You figure you could never get that lucky . . . so it was nice."
He isn’t sure what he is going to do with the money.
"We’ve got guys looking at motorcycles, cars, mortgages, kids’ education. Some guys are talking about taking a trip," he said.
"We’ll just sit back and let the dust settle and take it from there."
He said everyone was planning to return to work today, although a few of the winners have more than 25 years in the service and may choose to retire sooner than expected.
"They were toying with the idea of getting out in a year or two anyway," said Mr. Brown, who has two teenage children.
"That might just speed it up."
