Göbekli Tepe is the world's oldest known religious structure.[4] The site, located on a hilltop, contains 20 round structures which had been buried, four of which have been excavated. Each round structure has a diameter of between 10 and 30 meters (30 and 100 ft) and all are decorated with massive, mostly T-shaped, limestone pillars that are the most striking feature of the site. The limestone slabs were quarried from bedrock pits located around 100 meters (330 ft) from the hilltop, with neolithic workers using flint points to carve the bedrock.[9] The majority of flint tools found at the site are Byblos and Nemrik points. That neolithic people with such primitive flint tools quarried, carved, transported uphill, and erected these massive pillars has astonished the archaeological world, and must have required a staggering amount of labor.[10]

Two pillars are at the center of each circle, possibly intended to help support a roof, and up to eight pillars are evenly positioned around the walls of the room. The spaces between the pillars are lined with unworked stone and there are stone benches between each set of pillars around the edges of the wall.[11]

Many of the pillars are decorated with carved reliefs of animals and of abstract enigmatic pictograms. The pictograms may represent commonly understood sacred symbols, as known from Neolithic cave paintings elsewhere. The reliefs depict lions, bulls, boars, foxes, gazelles, donkeys, snakes and other reptiles, insects, arachnids, and birds, particularly vultures. (At the time the shrine was constructed, the surrounding country was much lusher and capable of sustaining this variety of wildlife, before millennia of settlement and cultivation resulted in the near–Dust Bowl conditions prevailing today.)[8] Vultures also feature prominently in the iconography of the Neolithic sites of Çatalhöyük and Jericho; it is believed that in the early Neolithic culture of Anatolia and the Near East the deceased were deliberately exposed in order to be excarnated by vultures and other carrion birds. (The head of the deceased was sometimes removed and preserved—possibly a sign of ancestor worship.)[12] This, then, would represent an early form of sky burial, as practiced today by Tibetan Buddhists and by Zoroastrians in India.[13]

Yea it's pretty wild for 12'000 years ago.

Very impressive especially in light of what the level of technology was back then.

I'm sure when the Caliphate/MB's takes over the whole area, they'll want to have it destroyed as it's naughty.  Just like the Pyramids...    ::)

here's another odd one.....

300-million-year-old UFO tooth-wheel found in Russian city of Vladivostok

Lighting the fire during a cold winter evening a resident of Vladivostok found a rail-shaped metal detail which was pressed in one of the pieces of coal that the man used to heat his home. Mesmerized by his discovery, the responsible citizen decided to seek help from the scientists of Primorye region. After the metal object was studied by the leading experts the man was shocked to learn about the assumed age of his discovery. The metal detail was supposedly 300 million years old and yet the scientists suggest that it was not created by nature but was rather manufactured by someone. The question of who might have made an aluminum gear in the dawn of time remains unanswered.

Nowadays, finding a strange artifact in coal is a relatively frequent occurrence. The first discovery of this sort was made in 1851 when the workers in one of the Massachusetts mines extracted a zinc silver-incrusted vase from a block of unmined coal which dated all the way back to the Cambrian era which was approximately 500 million years ago. Sixty one years later, American scientists from Oklahoma discovered an iron pot which was pressed into a piece of coal aged 312 million years old. Then, in 1974, an aluminum assembly part of unknown origin was found in a sandstone quarry in Romania. Reminiscent of a hammer or a support leg of a spacecraft “Apollo”, the piece dated back to the Jurassic era and could not have been manufactured by a human. All of these discoveries not only puzzled the experts but also undermined the most fundamental doctrines of modern science.

There is no reason to think that people were not as smart, ambitious or otherwise similar to us today back then (indeed, if this was not true then sciences like history, archaeology, sociology or economics would not even be possible).

It will be fascinating to see what further discoveries are made, and how our understanding of our ancestors changes as we learn more.

Very interesting.  It all depends on your definition of people.
Who ever created these artificats, they were not homo sapiens, 300 million years ago was well before homo sapiens or any of our mammal ancestors.

It would be fascinating to learn how these metal artificats became embedded in coal.  Was the earth inhabited by previous intelligent species, is it a question of time travel or a deliberate hoax?

Anyone else have any more Silly Wild A**ed Guesses?

Starting to feel pretty silly mocking the Scientologists' sermons from space now, aren't you.

Nahh....me neither.  ;)

We need to learn who these creators or architects were so we can figure out how to destroy them

Just dabbling in reading about Sumerians, Enoch and  a past that we've forgotten there are some pretty fantastic theories out there that are at least on part with a dude in the clouds shouting lights camera action.

Just dabbling in reading about Sumerians, Enoch and  a past that we've forgotten there are some pretty fantastic theories out there that are at least on part with a dude in the clouds shouting lights camera action.

The theories are marvellous - in an eye-watering fashion - but, giving credit where its due, the theorists do serve to highlight the myriad outlier data points that conventional theories don't cover.

Take Gobekli Tepe for example:

One argument used in favour of ET was that the quality of pyramid building declined from the age of Khufu and there was nothing to indicate how Khufu's builders learned their trade.  It must be aliens.

Gobekli Tepe gives the lie to that.  As do places like Catal Huyuk, Malta and Skara Brae. It also opens the possibility of the older age of the Sphinx being possible (Schoch's 5000 to 6000 BC).

You don't need aliens.  You just need sailors.  Sailors to take ideas and travellers from Cyprus to the Orkneys and back. And sailors have been crossing deep water in the modern Med since at least 10,000 BC (Cyprus sailors)

Catal Huyuk fascinates me as much as Gobekli Tepe.  Approximately concurrent with the burial of Gobekli Tepe 9000 years ago Catal Huyuk opened for business a couple of hundred kilometers away.  A thriving town of a couple of thousand obsidian traders who raised their own food and whitewashed the walls of their apartments every year.

Judging from the look of the lady of the house, I'm guessing she was't the one with the paintbrush in hand.

On the other hand: you may be looking at the Mother of the RCR.

It's quite easy for mankind to degrade scientifically.  Just add religion and/or ill informed authorities dictating what is factual, or what is worth pursuing.  Repeat over several hundreds of years and voila!

This is a great starting page for researching the phenomena. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_science
