Had to happen on the 401 eventually.....the WORST highway in Canada. Especially the Toronto - Belleville stretch.

Mod edit by Vern to topic title to reflect confirmed number of deceased now being published.

..and this just reaffirms my belief that it should be law that when a certain "weather warning" is issued, vehicles hauling ' dangerous cargo' [ gas, liquid oxygen, etc] must pull themselves off the road....

Actually, the 401 is the busiest highway in all of North America.  From my travels it has been a miracle of upgrading since it was built in 1962.  All the acid head civil engineers went to Alberta.  Does Calgary even have a ring road yet (Edmonton, Saskatoon and Winnipeg do) or is 16th Avenue still it for the trans Canada?

I must admit that when I last drove that stretch there was a temporary clover leaf that was completely bizarre...

My condolences to the families involved.

Sorry but obviously you haven't driven through the Kicking Horse pass on the Trans-Canada.  I don't believe it's the highway but the drivers who are to blame.

Yes,

There's also the Hwy 17 stretch to consider....

I was talking to someone today who stopped a few hundred metres behind the trailing end of accident site - apparently it was quite a scene.

There is always one more individual that needs to find out that, unfathomably, THIS year snow and ice are slippery again.  :o
99% of collisions are preventable (notice I don't call it an accident).  It's also a even odds bet that the m/v that caused the collision probably wasn't involved in it.  I cannot believe how clueless some people are on the road.  Even in brutal conditions, they leave no lead time, drive right on each others arse end.
And the ones who get killed are rarely the ones who are at fault.  But wait and see the news crow off about "bad weather claims lives..."  No, bad driving claimed lives.

I was listening to the radio today when they were covering the story.  The police they interviewed were saying that even with the roads being snow covered they drivers weren't slowing down.

Belleveille Torotnto strech is nothin.. In 3 years we had almost 40-50 killed between Chatham and Windsor on the 401. in one, 20 people were killed, and the helicopter from Fox news 8 was on the scene even before The OPP. And it was near Mid summer about 830am..

Yet one never see's a politician question the "loss of life" on our roads...........maybe next time one pipes up we should ask what the "exit tragedy" is.

Hey, its 'Radio Chatter", things aren't supposed to stay on topic.

Not quite.

° On the morning of Sept. 3, 1999, a heavy fog rolled onto Highway 401, east of Windsor. The pile-up that followed involved 87 vehicles. Eight people were killed and 45 injured in what is recognized as the largest pile-up in Canadian history.

It was, however, avoidable.

Highway 17, Kicking Horse pass, parts of NB and MB/SK are brutal and shouldn't even be called the trans Canada.  I figure it's only a matter of time until there's some hazmat incident on the 16 going through Calgary.  This is a big problem and expensive one, but one the feds should take over from the provinces that can't do it.

I agree Bruce, what a horrible tragedy  :(

I did the Borden - Kingston run yesterday just after the accident and it was a mess East of Couburg, too...did a loop up 115, over 9 and down 30 through Brighton to avoid the mess.  I have no doubt that it was likely initiated by some idiot pulling a stunned manoeuvre in front of an 18-wheeler just like the jack-ass that nearly fish-tailed into me by Belleville trying to swing around on the left to pass me then pull right in front of me to take the off-ramp...  >:(

Thoughts and prayers to family of those who went in a very bad way!

I heard that the two people the were killed in the collision were the driver of the truck, who the firefighters could here screaming, and a woman who got out of her car to try and direct traffic around the scene was hit by another vehicle
