2 Men Charged for Online Death Threats

The various major social media companies tend to be very cooperative with law enforcement in these cases so long as law enforcement have production orders, and for this type of case those aren’t hard to get. If you threaten to kill politicians, you’re gonna have a bad day.

But it's the internet !!
I mean what ever happened to our 1 st Amendment rights or does it just apply to certain Canadians and not me .
I suspect that will be their argument.
While trying not to deflect from the truly serious nature of what these people were attempting to do .
In the back of my mind however, I keeping thinking. "Tell me does hurt to be that stupid ?"

One of the freedum convoy guys actually tried to claim it was his first amendment right; the judge agreed with him that Manitoba was a Canadian province.

I wish I could find the actual quote from the court transcript, it was pretty hilarious.

Having been a witness to and subject of a death threat, I can tell you it's usually a pretty specific statement aimed at an identifiable person that gets you charged. Do it on the Internet and it doesn't just go away.
Yup, a fair bit of directness and specificity is normally needed to get a conviction. Your average shit talker on Twitter or Telegram doesn’t come close, and they know it.
