2026 US-Denmark Tensions/End of NATO

That's not very brave of us. Trump isn't threatening to invade Europe proper, just a territory with less people than Fredericton, NB. He is threatening to invade Canada. We need hammer the US with tariffs to show them we mean business. It may even simultaneously take the heat off of Greenland.
Once bitten, twice shy
Speaking of which, is Canada sending any troops as a show of solidarity with our European allies yet?
According to Andrew Coyne, it's being discussed in DND and the go ahead is waiting on Carney.

Can't watch right now, but Paul Wells just distributed a transcript.

One hell of a speech. The man seems ready to at least try and meet the moment.

Yep. I just wish he would stop being so eager to jump into bed with Beijing. That’s what kept me from voting Liberal for the first time in my life and is keeping me from giving him a B grade.

Michael Kovrig has been very vocal about our government’s naïveté with regards to Beijing despite everything that has happened in the last 30 years. I agree with him.

We’re being told our choices are Kang and Kodos. I refuse to accept this.

It's just a stupid fight to pick. And this is a gifted off-ramp. He should take it.

Unfortunately based on their actions last weekend, that off-ramp should have been last week. I fear it’s too late now.

That's called 'signaling'.

Its putting on notice that they may very well going down this path.

The Norwegian Sovereign Fund has a value of over 2 TRILLION USD. Here are their posted top 10 holdings:
  1. NVIDIA Corp (US)
  2. Microsoft Corp (US)
  3. Apple Inc (US)
  4. Amazon.com Inc (US)
  5. Alphabet Inc. (Google) (US)
  6. Meta Platforms Inc. (US)
  7. Broadcom Inc. (US)
  8. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) (Taiwan)
  9. Tesla Inc. (US)
  10. Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (US)
If they started to sell these, even drip by drip, NASDAQ would be kneecapped.
The NSF owns approximately 1.5% of every globally listed stock.
Of that over 2 Trillion in USD, 13% of it is in fixed income and of that, 181 Billion USD is in US Treasuries.

What do you believe our choices to be?

I’ve told you before, there is an entire world of democratic middle powers we could be making better deals with who are also not happy with the two superpowers whom we share values with. I’m all in favour of trade and engagement; not “strategic partnership” and being one of China’s “old friends” (look it up).

It makes no sense to hop from the embrace of one aggressive authoritarian tyranny to another. It’s like being asked to pick Pol Pot or Hitler.

As Carney mentioned in his speech, Canada and the the Scandinavian countries together represent 20% of global GDP...

... and what he didn't mention is that this group also represents the most reliable, trusted, not available at the whim of a batshit crazy leader, continuous source of critical natural resources, which other countries would be happy to pay extra for.

I don't think it's much beyond words. The deal was actually pretty tepid, despite the language. Tariffs were just rolled back to 2024 levels. Also, the US and Australia both have substantially more trade with China than us. And the Australians do call it a "strategic partnership". A lot of noise from the US on this in particular, reeks of double standards.

Also, those "democratic middle powers" aren't easy or close to enough to sustain our current prosperity. How much more oil and gas are Japan and Korea going to take given their declining population? And who is going to let in Canadian made vehicles? You know the industry that employs hundreds of thousands.

China isn't going to be our saviour. I think Carney knows that. But we will have zero leverage with the US, unless we have a deal with China. You're arguing for unilateral disarmament in essence.

Do you think Carney should send Canadian troops?
We already have troops in Nuuk now and more are on the way for a pre-plan NORAD operation.

What we might want to do, is offer the Danes/Finns/Swedes/Norwegians to spend some time in Alert.

We don't need a 'saviour', we need a number of 'saviours' - Trying to change the US for China is plain stupidity. We simply need to add 4-7 new mid size trading partners. Either 'net new' or taking a smaller one and moving them up to a medium sized one.

Speaking of the EU and tariffs, we'll find out soon enough.

Also speaking in Davos, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reiterated his warning to European leaders against retaliation, urging them to "have an open mind".

"I tell everyone, sit back. Take a deep breath. Do not retaliate. The president will be here tomorrow, and he will get his message across," he said.

Rich.
