I'd agree with the esthetic opinion, but mittens on a string is the most truly Canadian feature about them. I wouldn't denigrate the practice on a forum frequented by generations of soldiers who did the same every winter.
Canadian Olympic branded mittens were apparently one of the best selling items of merch going back to the Vancouver games when HBC was the uniform provider.

I have two traditions. First, every year, for Christmas I put a pair of socks in everybody's stocking. Second, in every Winter Olympic year, I put a Canadian Olympic team's piece of gear in as a gift to everyone n the family.
This year, Lululemon let me hit both traditions in one shot because they had Olympic team's socks as an item available for purchase.

US downhill skier Lindsay Vonn lifted off the course by helicopter. Forty-one, off the circuit for six years, partial tin knee, helicoptered off a few weeks ago during trials. I would take a hint.

The ex-girlfriend of Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Laegreid — who admitted live on television to being unfaithful in their relationship — has responded to his plea for forgiveness.
His ex-girlfriend, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to Norwegian tabloid VG, said it will be “hard to forgive” Laegreid for his actions and for choosing to publicly air his indiscretions.
“I did not choose to be put in this position, and it hurts to have to be in it,” she told the publication.
“We have had contact, and he is aware of my opinions on this,” she added.

So, I read the US isn’t happy with the hockey referees. It appears the Yanks think we're getting preferential treatment.
Their solution? If they think Canada continues to get better treatment, they will take their pucks and go home forever. Never to compete in this venue again.
Well, I think that's a deal. How do we get the refs to push the US against the wall? If all yanks are going to act like their spoiled, childish POTUS, it just makes it easier to forego trips and products to and from the lower 48.

The Tkachuk brothers are talented but such assholes. If the US team dumped those two then this would likely go away.
