Opinion | Canada’s medal total at Milan Cortina Olympics was a quiet reckoning: ‘Our system is in decline’

Every two years, sports in Canada comes under broad, though not necessarily deep, review. How many Olympic medals did we win? And at the Winter Games it’s been a long time since there was anything resembling a crisis. Canada won zero golds in 1988 in Calgary; Canada was tied for eighth in total medals in Albertville in 1992. And since then, Canada hasn’t finished lower than fifth in total medals at a Winter Games.

Until Milan and Cortina. Canada finished eighth in total medals with 21, but even that masked what the Canadian Olympic Committee called, over and over, an impending funding crisis. Three quarters of the medallists here were 30 or older. And the COC painted a serious, even dire portrait of the state of sport in Canada.

“Our system is in decline,” said Eric Myles, the COC’s chief sports officer.
