Doing a festival and parade on the 21st, they made quite a few changes due to this incident.
I am totally not surprised. I don't actually blame the government for not jumping onto this one, the expense will be huge and difficult to maintain the capability. At best I see some handbooks with advice for running an event.
Yeah, tough to know how far to go with target hardening for utterly routine events. How many two-block street festivals are there in a given year? Most won’t be on any obvious target list. Not every person motivated to mass violence will necessarily come up through a radicalization pathway that’s going to be visible to security intelligence or police services. There’s a diminishing rate of security return, and increased friction and frustration the more we target harden daily life.I am totally not surprised. Application of Dangerous Offender status should be aggressively pursued, and the creation of a forensic psychiatric facility for those who are unable or UNWILLING to better their MH.Well, they're not doing too great on fixing that mental health crisis thing either...

Forensic facilities are a must...but nobody wants to spend the money on (a) the facility and the tech required to run one safely, (b) the trained/skilled personnel required to keep patients/inmates secure and staff/patients/inmates safe and (c) opening up more training spots for psych RN's and psychiatrists AND then pay to employ enough of these specialist folks...not to mention specialist training for other health care team members to safely work in the environment and salaries for same. Then would come the issue of where to we set up this facility/facilities in relation to population centres in general, kind of like having a medium to maximum security prison next to your house. I lived like 2 blocks from Selkirk Mental Health Centre - now the largest facility in the province, which still has a forensics unit as well as a secure dementia facility. The grounds there are open - quite nice to walk around actually and used to cut through there if walking my dogs or needed a quick walk to work...not what I would consider ideal though for somewhere with medium to high risk patients/inmates.Application of Dangerous Offender status should be aggressively pursued, and the creation of a forensic psychiatric facility for those who are unable or UNWILLING to better their MH.
