Thought about this the other day:  Could one's time in the reserves be put to their serivce in the regular force, meaning could your reservist experience shave off time in your regular force contract?  i doubt this but I think it's a valid question.  also, do those 3 years start after basic, or on the day of basic or what?  thx

No reserve time only count towards your time credited to promotion (TCP) and pensionable service when you join the Reg Force.  Your three year contract starts when you sign on the line at the CFRC before going to St. Jean (basic/BMQ).

However initial engagement of three years is going to change soon for some trades.  For the ones that require long training times you will be required to stay in for a longer period of time so the CF can gain back the cost that it took in training you.  I highly doubt that the combat arms engagements will change much though.

As well as TCP, my combined reserve time (mostly Class B) went towards the awarding of my CD.

Just to add to what the other two mentioned, by the way, good info guys.

The tricky thing with crediting time is that only Class A/B/C days count. If you're not on any sort of military training, those days don't count towards your credit. I don't know the exact numbers but it goes something like this, you could be in the reserves for 3 years, but if you've only got about 100 training days, then you'll be credited for less than 6 months, if at all.  I did QL2, QL3, QL4 plus a year's worth of training at the unit before releasing to head off to college, when I joined the regular force, I requested a credit for those days and didn't receive anything. So there may be a limit on the min you can claim, in my case, I didn't get anything.

The contract starts the day you're sworn in, I was sworn in on the 16th of June and the 15th of June will  be my last day when my contract expires.

Cheers

You will find that only when you have had a "Full Time" call out will it be considered as full-time service.  With a mixture of Call Outs over a period of over six years, I was only credited with one and a half years towards my pension (which I had to buy).  Most of my Reserve time was recorded as 1/4 of total.  I was only credited with six months full time.

If you are going to buy back your Reserve time, towards your pension, do it right away when you join.  If you wait until later, it will cost you more than what it is worth.

When it comes to courses that you have taken, then there are different criteria involved.  If you have crses that are pertinent to your trade in the Regular Force, they may be recognized.  If you have crses that do not relate to your trade in the Regular Force, they may not be acknowledged or credited to you.  I believe that most CFJLC and JNCO crses will be recognized, but you may not see that rank until you have some TI and been on the Merit List for a while.  Most D&M Crses will be recognized as they will be on your 404's and 416.
