5 Canadian soldiers suspended after Nazi salute video emerges

Incident is the latest alleged case of right-wing extremism to rock the military

The Canadian Army is now dealing with another incident of alleged hateful conduct that involves Quebec-based soldiers caught on video allegedly partying while some people at the event delivered Nazi salutes.

In a statement, Lt.-Gen. Mike Wright, the commander of the army, said the video was brought to his attention on Aug. 6, and an immediate internal investigation was launched "to determine the breadth and scope of the incident."

Military police have also been notified, he added.

Although the video shows several individuals, Wright said at least five of them have been identified as serving members of the Canadian Army. Those soldiers have been suspended from military duties pending an investigation by the unit.

"One individual can be seen performing drill in front of the Royal 22e Régiment flag and then consuming a substance," Wright said in the written statement.

"At one point in the video, other individuals perform the Nazi salute. Although I have been made aware that these events happened in 2023, these members remain subject to administrative and disciplinary action that may lead to their release."

I think I have a better solution for how to deal with these idiots:

It was the Van Doos that did this, leave the rest of the army out of it.

Um... I think there are enough previous examples of nasty behaviour from a few people in the 'rest of the Army' to avoid focusing on one or two units, hence this order...

COMMANDER CANADIAN ARMY INTENT

6. My intent is to eliminate racism, discrimination and hateful conduct in the CA. Racism exists in our ranks, in our practices, and in our biases. First and foremost, we need to decisively address hateful conduct as it has the potential to harm members that are being targeted by these behaviours and those who witness these acts. Within the Army, this reality has the potential to tear at our very fabric because it undermines CA morale, discipline and cohesion, which ultimately affects our operational readiness. Within the CAF, hateful conduct is contrary to Canadian military ethos and erodes our institutional credibility as the component of the force designed to operate within diverse populations with different gender, racial, religious and cultural identities across our nation and abroad; it calls into question the CAF’s ability to act on behalf of the people of Canada, degrades its relevance, and breaks the public trust. Lastly, these behaviours are exploited by hostile actors and therefore represent a direct threat to our ability to fulfill our security and defence missions.

Go look at the Instagram comments, there’s a lot of very disturbing comments getting a lot of support.
I would bet, dollars to donuts, that the vast majority of the “disturbing comments” are from bot farms in Iran or Russia, looking at amping the incident.

We have seen this in the past in the west.

I’m speculating, but with five troops IDed and suspended so far, and with there having been someone doing drill in front of a regimental flag, I suspect quite a few more of them will turn out to have been troops (if in fact there are many more in the video). Without having seen the video it’s tough to gauge from the article how much culpability any specific individuals would have had in terms of awareness of what was going on.

I would assume a bunch of investigative interviews have taken place by now.
