5 Reasons Humanity Desperately Wants Monsters to Be Real

You believe in monsters, whether you know it or not -- and I'm not even talking about the two-thirds of Americans who believe in demons and demon possession, or all of us who for a couple of weeks thought the Miami cannibal attack was the beginning of a zombie apocalypse (deny it all you want, but I know how hard it was to find shotgun shells that week). No, I'm talking about the monsters that live in your brain.

They are the reason we go see scary movies, and why we obsess over the most gruesome, face-eating news stories. These monsters are an important part of who we are and, by the way, are quite a bit more terrifying than the thing you only thought lived under your bed when you were a kid.

Oh...I am actually disappointed. Cracked can be very deep sometimes, sometimes they're just dicks, sometimes, they're just dumb. i was hoping for a  philosophical treatment of mythological monster myths.

What are your reasons? here are my reasons for why people desperately want monsters to be real, in nor particular order.

1. If Monsters are real, then maybe people aren't so bad afterall.
2. If Monsters are real, it's not all our fault.
3. If Monsters are real, maybe there's hope for a utopian future where all humanity teams up to fight them.
4. If Monsters are real, maybe (like Vampires, Werewolves, ect), any joe or jane can become one and have a mysterious background and quick and easy route to power and access to a cool, secret underworld (no, not the Underworld movies).
5. If Monsters are real, it would be really cool if Lovecraft, Rice, et al, really were telling the truth all along (though if Lovecraft was right, that's not going to be any kind of fun.)

I know monsters are real, I'm a history student; they're called human beings.
