Hello,

I'm Terry and own Ship Harbour Woodcraft here in East Ship Harbour on the Easter Shore. I'm looking at getting into making canes. Does anybody have a contact were I can acquire 50 Cal and 20mm spent casings? Thanks.

Sorry to say that due to accidents and incidents in the past CAF/DND regs do not permit the sale of salvage.
That being said it is not illegal to own the cartridge cases. You might be able to source them from the US. If you find them for sale in Canada they were either sourced prior to the regulations, or diverted in violation of the regulation.

The importation might require CTAT/ITAR compliance.

Thanks for the quick reply. Cheers!

I'll suggest finding someone with a metal lathe that can spin out the basic shape for you from solid brass which can be hollowed out to fit onto your canes.

Scrap military brass is required to be destroyed as a part of the sale contract - it must be mutilated or melted down, and while it gets sold in lots of like 10000 Kg, none of it is allowed to be kept in it's original form by the end purchaser from GC Surplus.

Here's a sample of scrap brass sold by GC Surplus:

Note the attached criteria:

  1. Destruction criteria: the buyer must mutilate (e.g., crush, shred) or smelt the Small Arms Ammunition (SAA) brass cartridges so that the cartridges can no longer be reloaded or re-used for their intended purpose.
  2. Destruction must be done in Canada: the buyer must mutilate or smelt the SAA brass cartridges at a location in Canada.
  3. Timeline for destruction: the buyer must mutilate or smelt the brass cartridges within 90 days of taking possession of the material.
  4. Mutilation or smelting before transfer or resale to a third party: the buyer must mutilate or smelt the brass cartridges prior to any transfer or resale to a third party.
  5. Proof of destruction: the buyer must complete and provide to Canada and Custodian a Certificate of Destruction, confirming the mutilation of the brass cartridges, within 90 days of taking possession of the material.

Here's another example:

  5. Proof of destruction: the buyer must complete and provide to Canada and Custodian a Certificate of Destruction (DND 2586), confirming the mutilation of the brass cartridges, within 90 days of taking possession of the material.
  6. Access to the buyer's premises in order to witness the destruction: upon request, the buyer must give representatives of the Custodian access to the buyer's premises for the purpose of witnessing the crushing/smelting.

Look for gun, sportsman and militaria shows in the Maritimes. You will almost certainly find what you need.

Yard sales may turn up some stuff too.
