Hello everyone,

I am thinking about applying, and in fact was half way through the process last year when a family emergency came about, and I think I am going to join the reserves but I‘m not sure. I‘m just wondering, how the regular force works... Like will I still be able to get married and have a family? What if I‘m already married? How do living arrangements work etc.?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Being married before you join, or getting married somewhere down the road is acceptable, and normal. Living arrangements are your own after you are MOC qualified, whether you opt to live on base or off. If you are married before you join, you will be separated from your family for the duration of basic trg. On your first posting to a unit, your family will be moved to your place of duty.

The military doesnt mean you don‘t get to have a life... it just means your life is more.... regulated. ;-)

lol @ regulated :)

ok thanx that helps a lot. What about moving expenses? Do I pick them up, or is it all taken care of?

MOC = Military Occupation Code

Every trade (for NCMs) and classification (for Officers) has one. For instance:

011 - Armoured Crewman
021 - Artilleryman
031 - Infantryman

21 - Armoured Officer
22 - Artillery Officer
23 - Infantry Officer

Vamp,

welcome by the way...

If you are already married your spouse and personal affects will be moved after your occupational three‘s course. The military will pay for this but not until you are qualified in your trade. You may have to wait many months for this depending on the trade you choose. If you are not married the military will move your personal affects from the address you applied from (home) up to a certain weight, I believe. That is how it used to be anyway. If you get married after joining and completing your trades training it is your responsibility to pay for their initial move to join you and their personal affects.

Hope this helps and if any of this information is no longer correct someone please jump in.

PLan on paying for everything. If you get it back, think of it as a bonus.

If you look at it this way, you‘ll be much happier, less stressed, and financially better of than expecting it to be covered and either not being reimbursed, or it taking 3 months for it to appear in your bank account.

And by the way, if you have any thought about joining Reg force do not, I repeat, do not join the reserves. To get transfered over from reserve to reg can take 1-2 years.

oh really? ouch..... hmm that proves a bit of a problem heh..

Not necessarily. It depends on your luck really. Some take couple of months, some 6 months, some a year or more.

ok well that doesn‘t make it sound as bad... but still.. guess its a bit of a gamble :p

i suggest you join the reserves first, this way if you don‘t like it you will still have your front part of your brain to use
