Hello
I am a proud Canadian who wishes to join the Army, but there's a few glitches.

Here's the stitch:
I want to be a chef, preferably the Navy, but it doesn't really matter. The thing is (one of them) is that I'm blind in my right eye (almost... still some vision, and I have glasses, but still....) and I (MIGHT) develop diabetes. That's the main problem. In all other ways, according to the Forces web site, and my local Cadets second-in-command, I'm very qualified. I'm in Sea cadets, in the marksmanship courses and applying for drill and ceremony teams. I have a high average in all my subjects. I want to go to RMC Kingston, for post secondary.

I'm heading to grade 9 next year, and need to choose my courses to take me in that direction, but I need to know if I can join the forces, as my second choice career is something totally differant....

Will I be able to sign up?

Check the CF website (www.forces.ca) to check and compare vision requirements.

I will warn you though, if you're in grade 9, you aren't qualified, let alone very qualified. Cadets won't get you in (although it will help), so I recommend doing some volunteering and sports as well. I find that the CF recruiters very much like people who play on teams sports and excel. With that said, I joined without much teams sports or volunteering experience, but with the economy and the cutbacks, things have changed and become considerably more competitive.

I meant that when I turn 17, I will be a qualified canadate.

I am not a medical professional, and only a Recruiting Centre can give you a definite answer once you are eligible to apply, but I do not believe that you will meet the medical requirements for enrollment if you are nearly blind in one eye.

Please search the forums for previous discussions regarding eyesight requirements and limitations.
