(CNN) A CIA airstrike on a building in Pakistan may have killed Osama bin Laden's most trusted aide, sources said.

The building where Ayman al-Zawahiri was thought to be was in a small village near the Afghan border.

There has been no confirmation that al-Zawahiri was killed in the attack. However, sources say there was intelligence suggesting he was in the building at the time of the strike.

Pakistani officials were at the scene of the strike, trying to determine if Al-Zawahiri was killed.

Note quite on topic, and forgive me if it sounds idiotic, but the CIA has jets? or does it just mean the military carried it out based on CIA intel?

Predator's with hellfire missiles are a great combination. Same type of op that killed Hamza Rabia last month.

Here is a link if you want to see a picture of a Predator armed with a hellifre. In the world of Joint/Combined Strategic Operations. Many assest are brought into the fight to acomplish the objective and complete the mission successfully.

PREDATOR RQ-1 / MQ-1 / MQ-9 UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLE (UAV), USA
RQ-1 Predator is a long endurance, medium altitude unmanned aircraft system for surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Surveillance imagery from synthetic aperture radar, video cameras and a forward looking infra-red (FLIR) can be distributed in real-time both to the front line soldier and to the operational commander or worldwide in real-time via satellite communication links. MQ-1, armed with AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, is the multi-role version which is used for armed reconnaissance and interdiction.

Nothing like a good old UAV with a missile...

Oh wait, these things are brand new.

No they aren't. Predators have been doing sorties for about 3 years now armed with Hellfire missles.

Regards

Apparently, they missed:

Well I wouldn't put much stock in what Pakistan says.  Until they do DNA testing no one will know.

This article just goes to show how much worse the americans are making this so called war on terroism on themselve. this is a quote from the article

At another destroyed house, Sami Ullah, a 17-year-old student, said 24 of his family members were killed and vowed he would "seek justice from God."

Just great another holy warrior is made, A lot of the problems that are out there unfortunaltly are being created by the United States and other countrys. The locals of this bombing are calling it open terrorism, this is going to fuel there hate and desire for revenge and will just cause more problems down the road. Just my thoughts.

This is our war on terror as well. I find this common Canadian practise of American bashing very disturbing.  Intelligence is not a perfect science and certainly war is an untidy business. Mistakes will continue to be made but we must continue the fight...and yes support the Americans because, they are supporting US. :salute:

No of course not, this whole war on terrorism is a sham. They created this mess so they can achieve objectives that will suite there needs. Oil. Oil. Oil. Thats obvious, and now there in really deep and have to finish what they started. So that means going after these guys sure thats necessary. And i know civilian casualties are a part of this package but Ever since America has been a super power and they go beating up on the bad guys they alway end up causing more problems then good. They think they have good intelligence so they blow up a building in Pakistan thinking that dude is in there. Wrong they blow up a village piss off more people and now down the road this will bite them in the ***. My opinion is that America causes a lot of problems for them selves always in the long run because they always go for the quick fix. They dont know any other approach. They cant catch osama bin laden but they have blown up a lot of builings trying to find him. No we shoulndnt go knock on his door and ask him to surrender of course not, but i think that they could use more informants, recruit more pakis whatever, find out his contacts, his allies, his interests, send in a hit team, couple guys, so they can confirm the kill, dont blow up a whole block and hope they hit the guy. They are supposed to be the super power in the world, hire contract killers pay them off, I think America could learn something from the Isralis, they do busisness and take care of it. The mossad has great experience in taking people of interest out. You can hide for a long time but eventually the rat will come out of his cave, just wait and give it time, no need to get it done tonight. I am ranting here and maybe went off topic, sorry for that, just my thoughts.

And this was the only thread you could find to vent your "rant".....

I think the "America is the meanie" debate has been been debated ad nauseum, please find 'em and thanks for the revelations...

btw...cool moniker!!

Yeah, and I'd put so much stock into what the US is saying, what with the Iraq intel and all.

CNN's reporting 5 women and 5 children amongst the dead.

::)
George W just logged on looking for you and doesn't know how to find you based on your profile. But I heard he was open to your Coles notes solution to the world's problems.

I think America could learn something
and maybe someone else........

Get off the "anti American podium" and get back on track. It'll get locked otherwise.

The Hellfire weighs 99 pounds with an 18 pound warhead. A Predator can carry two missile. Tribesmen on the ground reported seeing jets. Possibly Pakistani F-16's, but from the ground you cant tell. Reports said there were 10 missile strikes, then it was four. Then there is the picture of an unexploded 155mm shell said to have been used in the attack.

Have the Americans declared war on Pakistan?  Is is just me or does it seem extremely wrong to bomb a country that is your ally??
