I did a search on google, and on here as well.

First, I am wondering if I joined the reserves and I wanted to go in as a PH Tech, where I would probley be stationed. I am Just North of Toronto. Is there any close by? I am also wondering since its a different occupation compared to Infantry, or Armoured would I still have the same type of sched? From the CF website it says that reservists often work one half day a week, and one weekend a month. Would that roughly be the same? Now, if I am stationed say in Borden, then when I would work on the weekend would I sleep on base? Im not sure how this works, and couldent find very much information.

Aside from all that, is it difficult to get in as a PH Tech? It shows that the minimum education is grade 10, which I have. And I also have previous work experience in this trade.

Superbeast, as for the rest of your questions, they will be best answered by your local CFRC, as well as the local reserve unit that you would be a member of.  You can find out from CFRC what units in your area have PH techs.  Give that/those units a call, and ask to speak to other PH techs there and get some firsthand knowledge about the trade.  Good luck.

Well PH Tech is an Air Force trade, so look up your nearest AirRes Sqn/Flight and ask them if they've got a position available. Res schedules are all pretty much the same, 1 night a week 1 weekend a month.

The words "reserves" and "Stationed" don't normally go together, as a reservist you work at you home unit, usually one night a week and or weekends, the only time you would be stationed normally is if you ask for a tasking.

The one night and or weekend a week thing is usually a guideline some units parade one night a week others every second weekend, it all depends on the unit.

To go along with my first response, if you don't live near by then normally yes you do live on base when on tasking, unless you want to rent an apartment for the summer or how ever long you are there.

Hmmm... I haven't met any Army PH Techs... and I know the Airforce has them that's why I suggested that he go and visit an Air Reserve unit. oh well... I tried...

I thank everyone for their replys. I visted the CF website, and under Reserves, it does show a job for PH Techs (Part time). I think the best thing for me is to call, and try and get more information. I thought I would try here first though.

I have a few questions regarding the engineering trades in the forces.  The Ph tech trade i know is plumbing and heating, but what i wanted to find out is after your 5 year commitment, are you a licensed plumber?  Say if you wanted to leave the forces and return to civy life, would you have to become an apprentice and learn from the start? Or would you already be a licensed plumber ?

Well to start off, im not in the PH trade, im an ex-combat engineer, but then jumped over to the trade side of the house, i am a Construction Tech. and to answer your question in a nut shell, will it happen with in 5 years? well frist year is recruit course, then second year should be your aprentice course, then doing 2 years of OJT (on the job training) you will go on your journeyman course. so in the military eyes you are a Qualified PH Tech, how ever you dont have your civi ticket, that is up to you, after doing your journeymans course and getting the hours needed for your trade, you can go challange the exam and if you pass it the military will reimburse your coin for the exam, and boom you have your ticket. Hope this helps you out. Oh if you are joining the military just to get a "ticket" in a trade its cool and all but here is the dirt of it all, its not all trade related things you will do, after all you will learn really fast you are a soldier first.

Here is the way it works. I am a ph tech.

You do your QL3 witch is 6-7 months in gagetown. Upon completing your ql3 you will be posted to a unit and you have a OJT book to fill out. The avg wait is 2-3 years then you are eligible for your QL5 witch is 6 months and in gagetown. Upon completion of this you go back to your unit and in a year's time your CO can write a memo witch allows you challenge your ticket in what ever province you are in. So if you look at it min of 8 years served to be a plumber.

Ill tell you this work civic street and work dnd. The stuff we do is far and beyond what you do in civi street.Its the best move i did was to go to the CF as a PH TECH. There is always a great challenge.

Just had a few questions that I would really appreciate some feedback on. Is the trade considered a specialist in the army? Would i get to skip the initial seven month training( realize  I have to still complete BMQ) And is there chance to travel and if so how often? Good overall job in the armed forces? You should look into skilled entry and there may be a signing bonus if you have your coursing completed. As well, you should submit a PLAR (Prior Learning Assessment Review) which will determine what you will be exempt for while on military courses.

None of the six entry level construction engineering trades matches with a single civilian trade.  Rather most overlap with multiple civilain trades.  That means that nobody gets a by-pass on the initial training.  However, 2 CAD has an MWO at CFSME with the primary function of conducting PLARs for guys joining the construction engineering trades.  If there are elements of your previous education and experience that credit can be given for, then you will likely get the credit for that portion of the training.
