First it was the GG. Actually, before her there were others but those seemed to be par for the course, minus the UK Chief of Defence Staff. We just had visits from the Minister of National Defence and the man himself, General Rick Hillier. This camp is a haven for those who want to see what is going on at the forefront of Canadian efforts in Afghanistan.
Now the disapointing part: What did you read\hear about on the news today regarding the MND and Afghanistan? I'll bet it wasn't how he was here to learn how reconstruction efforts have progressed and to see how the troops are doing. I know what you read because, being a Public Affairs Officer, I was in the middle of it all. I won't comment on any of it except to say the following:
The MND is a very likeable person who sat down with the guys to watch the hockey game this morning. He listened to what we had to say late into the night even though he was jet lagged and his body was telling him to get to sleep. He spent time getting to know who the soldiers are on the ground. He went to PRT projects to see them for himself and ask questions. He went to a prison and viewed the efforts of Correctional Services Canada to improve the facility so prisoners can have a better life. He did a lot more than what was reported back to Canadians.
I was with the media during this whole time. We missed out on the prison part because we had to reduce the number of vehicles in the convoy for security reasons. I just hope people realize that the MND had far more on his agenda than what was in the headlines.
