A Canadian military convoy was targeted by a roadside blast Thursday in Kandahar province, signalling a ramped up effort by insurgents in Afghanistan to target Canadians.
Canadians suffered no injuries in the blast, but a police official at the scene said 15 civilians were either killed or wounded. Canadian military officials have not confirmed any civilian deaths.
"We have a report of one local national being injured and who has since been evacuated to hospital by a local ambulance," Canadian Forces spokesperson Lt. Commander Kris Phillips told The Canadian Press.
Phillips said the blast appears to have come from a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device and there was no confirmation a suicide bomber was involved.
The convoy, made up of Canadian troops and Afghan National Army units, was travelling through Kandahar city on the dangerous Highway One when it was attacked.
CTV's Steve Chao in Kandahar said the "massive blast" could be seen for kilometres away. "There were buildings where entire windows, window panes were smashed," he said.
