So I have Applied for LCIS tech position.

There will be 13 weeks of BMQ and then another 10 Weeks of SQ,  after that I will have roughly 64 weeks of classroom training.

I know that my dog will not be able to come with me for BMQ and SQ, I have relatives that will watch her for me while I am doing those.  I am hoping that she will be able to join me after I finish the first 23 weeks of training.  (and b4 you say anything I have searched)

But I just read one post that said During occupation training I would have to live in Barracks.  So I couldn't have her with me..  Currently she is fine with me being gone for 8+ hours a day.

What are the rules can i live in civvi housing while i am in Kingston for training?

I'm in the same boat. I have a few people who may be willing to 'babysit' my dog (and I've offered a generous amount of money) until I get posted somewhere. Essentially I am banking on at least 6 to 8 months where she'll be in someone's home. When I get posted, I haven't decided yet where I'll live either on or off-base as I am taking things one day at a time -- I'll cross that bridge when it comes.

However, it's been (believe it or not) my biggest stressor the past few months!

I hope someone here can better answer your question for the trades training part. Something I am considering is when I am in Borden for the trades training, seeing if there is somewhere locally I can 'board' her at another private house in the town. That way I can try and see her a bit more often and she'd still be in a family-type situation.

Long-term? Gosh, having animals in the military isn't so bad if you have a spouse to watch over them when you're gone. (I know, I played this "spouse" role for over 6 years!) But, as a single person I can imagine it's going to really .... suck. But, it's a responsibility I've decided to take on and I know at some point we'll get settled down somewhere.

Let me know what kind of solutions/alternatives you have (or will) consider! Could come in handy very, very soon...

Well if I am forced to live on Base for Trade Training, and can't get accommodations for me and my dog...  I will try to find someone in town to board her while I am on base, (same as you).

Currently I live with Family and would not hesitate for her to stay with them for BMQ and SQ, (they have offered to care for her during that time, it does help that they have dogs as well)  Though I would pay them for the care as well (I offered 250 per month).

I just hope for Trades Training I can life off base if I choose.

You didn't mention what base you're training at so take this for what it's worth.

Leave your dog with your folks until you are posted to your unit, after trade training.

You may also have to live in the shacks until your CSM/ SSM and CoC decide you can live off base and not get into financial dire straights...so it may be a couple of years. I'm not too sure on claiming kennel fees so you'll have to ask your clerk/ CoC.

Keep in mind - the fact that you having a dog and you wanting to live off base is not the CF's concern...not one iota.

Regards

Kenneling is not covered for basic training & your trades training. It is covered though, during the actual moving when posted by someone who is a registered kennel operator. However, I don't want to board my dog at any point in a kennel and will be going privately so it's going to come out of my pocket.

You're absolutely right about the forces not caring one iota about animals --- don't they have people to worry about?? :)

It's just going to be a bit of a logistical nightmare but at the end of the day (for myself),  it'll be worth whatever hassles I put myself through for this. However, in the future I definitely won't be getting any more pets until I retire! Fortunately (or, unfortunately) my animals are getting a bit on the older side so I know it'll only be maybe a couple of years where this will be an issue.

I completely understand that me Having a dog is not the concern of the CF,

As far as where I would be doing my training I would be in Kingston at the RMC for roughly 60 weeks.

You aren't going to be going to RMC, you're going to be going to the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics (CFSCE).

And I wouldn't count on being allowed to live out on account of your dog.

I suppose I can shed a little bit of a different view for you to look into.  Have you read any of the threads on having a spouse or a boyfriend/girlfriend while on course?  Perhaps you should.  If certain rules apply to a person being separated from their loved ones (of the human species), what makes you feel a pet would be an exception?

I have owned a dog.  I have been away over long periods of time, in some cases years.  My dog stayed with my parents.  When I was home, it was as if I had never been away.

So get over it.  Leave your dog with your parents and when you do find a place of your own that allows pets, bring her.  Until then, be happy to visit her at your family's home.

Looks like you're going to have to put your dog down.  Just kidding.

I asked my parents to watch my dogs for me when I was going through my training (which for my trade was over two years) and they agreed, but by the time my training was over we had mutually agreed that the dogs were now more theirs than mine and they ended up keeping them since I was getting started with kids anyway and had my hands full.

Oh....that's what we've been listening to...? your inner child?..

Seriously, is there something in the freaking water?  What do you do with your dog?  What is next?  "I am heading off to basic soon but I am really worried about what is going to happen to Timmy my turtle"? Jesus wept!!

Not to totally hijack the thread but QFT does mean "quoted for truth". It's mostly used when someone posts something short-sighted or somewhat incredulous and another poster wishes to archive it in a sense by having a permanent record in the thread that the original poster can't go back and edit.

A question was asked. I think that it was answered adequately. Locked.
