Are there any regiments in 32 CBG in need of officers?

Hi there,

I was told by a friend of mine that you have to approach the regiment you're interested in to see whether the regiment is in need of the position you wish to apply for.  I am trying to find a regiment that needs officers in the GTA.  Are there any regiments which need officers in 32 CBG more than others?  Is this the way it works, or do they take you on the basis of your credentials and their assessment of your potential and make room for you if they think you are particularly valuable.

In my opinion, no regiment needs officers  ;D

If you want to command a stack of paperwork, apply at the CFRC like all the other officer.  Tey'll tell you if there's any openings and they'll take you through the proccess.  There's no point to going around from regiment to regiment and asking if they want to buy an officer.

I'd say....listen to your friend, and go to one of the Reserve Units near you and ask them those questions.  If they need officers, you will get an interview, probably after you enlist, and they will decide if you have what it takes, or are the type of person they want as an officer.  They may decide that you would do better as a NCM instead.  It is they, who will decide if you will be officer material.

Once you have choices of trades and units, visit the Recuiting NCO or officer for each and ask them if they are currently seeking officer applicants. the unit recruiters can help guide you through the process and assist you in preparing documents for the Recruiting Centre. It also ensures that they know your file is in progress and that you are interested in joining their unit, which is better than the unit first discovering you exist when the CFRC forwards a completed file.

I am sure the clerks on the site will be pleased to think you believe they are better suited to running your unit that you may be.

Perhaps one day you will understand the role of officers in a unit that allow you to simply spend your training evenings on the parade square or in the classroom without worrying about how the unit maintains itself.


Daveman, I apologize for this tangential exchange, but your inquiry should not have been used as an opportunity for a cheap shot against the officer corps.

I went through a similar search in the GTA about a year and a half ago when I was interested in signing up again, and I think George Wallace and your buddy have the best advice.  

You're best to call around and talk to the recruiting NCO or officer about their requirements (if you're interested in DEO you must have a degree or be in the final year of graduation) and then make an appointment, go down and talk to them.   (You can tell a lot about the unit just by the way they do their recruiting, IMHO.) I had an excellent experience talking with the Royal Regiment of Canada (which recruited me) and the 25 Service Battalion.

One of the advantages of the GTA is it offers every permutation of militia unit you could possibly want. Some of the combat arms units are excellent including the Royals, QOR, the Highland Infantry Units (48th, TorScots, Lorne Scots, etc), armour recce, (Horse Guards, QY Rangers) and of course artillery (7 Toronto).   If anything you might find too much choice. Try and narrow down your interests.

As an aside I think most units will be looking for good officers and they tend to board more candidates then they necessarily need because the attrition rate is high - or the recruiting process can often shrink the gene pool prematurely.

Aw, lighten up.  I know we need officers, even if I don't much like the way we do it now.  I'm sorry if I offended you, it was intended as a joke.

I can assure you most units within 32 CBG are looking for dynamic new leaders. There are as you know doubt know several units within the Bde and a wide choice of MOC's. Here is how it works pick an MOC and then a unit. Contact the unit recruiter via CFRC Toronto, 32 CBG has a Capt and x3 NCM's embedded in the office. At this point based on your level of education (you must be a graduate of, or enrolled in a post secondary program). You will be given a Ph# and the rest is easy. I suggest you bring a CV and be firm in your desires to be an Officer. By the I mean you might run into a recruiter with the Highlanders attitude. You will then be boarded by the unit (basically a job interview kicked up several degrees). Upon completion you may or may not be given a letter of support from the respective units CO. After that you then enter the process at CFRC Toronto as follows; CFAT, PT, Med, Interview and finally merit listed. I would strongly suggest if you wish to persue this do so now as summer trg will soon be upon us. Understand that being an Officer requires a large commitment on your part not to be taken lightly. In the event that you are not offered support at the board do not worry you can always join as an NCM and CFR after. I served in the ranks for 23 years reaching MWO before going the CFR route some 9 years ago. By the way if you have a degree what is it in if not what are you working on, depending on your answer I would be interested in speaking with you. Mr Wallace you are truly a wise man in your comments and advice. In any event Daveman I wish you luck in becoming and Officer and hope to see you on the trace........................
