I am very curious as to what kind of role armoured recce soldiers play overseas in Afghanistan?   What is their day to day scheduale like?   very curious....

Armoured Recce tasks were varied on Roto 0, ranging from OPs to point Recces and VIP convoy escorts.  The Coyote Troops were flexible and were a Brigade asset that operates throughout the ISAF Area of Operations.  I believe that this still holds true on the current Roto.

On Roto 0 the schedule was varied.  On average the crews would be gone for two to three days (and nights) on OPs and then spend a day in camp conducting maintenance and rest.  Sometimes they would be gone for a week at a time.  Our bit of the parking lot was often empty.  If they were conducting point/area recces they would be gone for the day.  The crews worked in two vehicle Patrols of eight men although we had the odd Troop or Squadron op.

If they weren't out of the camp or doing maintenance we pretty much left the Patrols to their own devices under their Patrol Commander.  Most would spend what free time they got at the gym or hang out in their Weatherhavens.  They still had to be ready to go at a moment's notice and did several times.  We had no set schedule except for the task table and the CP shift schedule.

Cheers,

p.s. Are you thinking of going?

Hopefully, the new tasking brick for Rotos for reservists comes out soon so that those of us that actually want a tour can apply before it's too late. I realize that much of the time the problems associated with getting the information are localized at the unit level, but actually having the information posted online much like they have started doing with B, C, and B (A) class positions would greatly improve the likelyhood that reservists will take a callout. I know for a fact that there have been people in my unit, including myself that have been willing and able to go on tour and due to lack of action at a higher level, our request were not submitted within the given time frame. I do realize that there is a chain of command, but the quicker we can get the pertinent information, the quicker we can submit up the chain of command.

I have to agree, online tools & resources must be used to promote activity & participation, OPS needs to get the info out to the troops....

It is constantly said that we're running rotos undermanned, but when it comes down to it, a lot of the times there are plenty of reservists that are trained and willing to take those posiitions that need to be filled. Unfortunately, by the time the information gets to those people, the roto is generally already en route.

Maclimius:

This has been explored on other threads, but I can tell you straight up that the Regs currently don't need Res F augmentation from within the Combat Arms - there are (by my count) around 8 LFWA infantry sub-units available for tasking right now, along with 2 x armour sqns and 2 x engr sqns - all are good to go.

The difference in skill sets between the Reg F and Res is now (IMHO) so great (particularly for Armoured Recce) that the training gap makes the prospect of large-scale Res augmentation untenable.  We are certainly NOT running rotos undermanned in any way, shape or form.

FYI, all operational tasks are sourced via CFTPO, the tasking program.  There's no such thing as a Reserve-specific brique or tasks assigned specifically to the Res F (OP BOREAS/BRONZE aside).  Things get held up when the Reg F can't fill a position and the system is left scrambling for a replacement.  A task can bounce throughout the Army before there's a taker and the task invariably ends up being sourced late in the game.  That's what takes so long...

I discussed this with a number of BCD officers in the Kelowna mess on Friday...hopefully word will filter down.

Cheers,

TR

Maclimius:  We dont need the help but thanks for the offer.  There are about 300 reg f soldiers that would like to be part of roto 4 but are not getting to ge as all the spots are full, there for we are not under manned.  When a jammy go comes up we'll let you know.

Guess I don't. Better explain yourself. You made the comment, you clarify and substantiate it.
