Artillery - Officer and NCM

Wouldnt have been able to produce such an exhaustive list of the BK duties on the gunline. Figured he was busy doing his own thing when we were waiting for fire mission. Sounds like a great job! The one we had was a pretty nice captain!

BKs are also sometimes employed as the Fire Support Coordination Officer at the Battle Group level depending on the relative experience and manning within a Battery and the need to employ a FSCC at the BG level. This leaves the gun position to a GPO which creates some risk given that the GPO nowadays is usually a pre-FOO Capt or Lt. A Battery Commander will decide where they want to assume the risk given that there is a very experienced BSM at the gun position.

Had two BSMs while I was a BK. Each of them could have done my job in the field in a heartbeat.

Absolutely. Hence why the math balances out to moving the BK to the FSCC. The BSM is all over the local defence as long as the young GPO is smart enough to listen to the BSM.

Didn’t necessarily want to start a new thread. But noticed today that it appears the CAF has changed the previous title of Artillery Soldier to Gunner. BZ

At the risk of hijacking this thread, I would like to restate the guiding principle of artillery on Artillery Day 2018:

There are two kinds of people - Gunners and Targets!

I know the Artillery soldier is more hands on. I just want to know if the Artillery officer (other than FOO) actually go with the guns, or if the just stay in an office directing fire.
I do prefer Artillery soldier (hands on) but i do like the education plan with the officer.

I knew Willy pretty well. One of the best humans anyone could be fortunate enough to meet (for a gunner :) ).

He was a good Artillery Officer:

That's the funny thing. Gunners are viewed a bit like lawyers. Everyone hates them in general but thinks that their own gunner/lawyer is a wonderful professional/human being.  ;D

I know they have different jobs and all, but I want to know specifically what they both do when firing down range.
Thanks for the help,
