Asian Earthquake

It would still require the Indian & / or Pakistani gov't to accept our offer for services.

Between the Indian and Pakistani armies, there are more troops in the affected Kashmir area than necessary.... so long as the two countries care to stop rattling sabres for a little while

IMHO

Both of these countries have extremely large and fairly well equipped armed forces, they should be able to take care of things for the most part.  The Indian Army has at least one million in the Reg force alone.

The only reason I could think of offering the DART would be out of solidarity, if they did go of course they would be of some benefit.

Exactly, OF.  The hue and cry will soon begin in the media to launch the DART.  However, we have to ask ourselves what possible good deploying such a tiny capability would do in the light of the fact that these countries possess two of the biggest militaries in the world.

Moreover, let's consider the security concerns of putting lightly armed Canadian soldiers in the midst of a conflict area (Kashmir) and right in the centre of Pakistani Muslim fundamentalism....which battalion is going with them?

The President of Pakistan has already said that they do not need people.  We've donated $20 million already...if India and/or Pakistan ask for the DART, then we should think about it - and not deploy soldiers unilaterally as some knee-jerk, feel good political reaction.

The US have sent eight helicopters, in response to requests from Pakistan (as you might imagine, roads aren't in the best of conditions after the earthquake - today there is rain and hail, just to add to the misery).
Personally, I'm an extreme of advocate of helicopters - they're worth their weight in gold, literally, during disaster response (and airmoble ops ... but I'll stay on topic ... although I find it soooo ironic that we sold our Chinooks to the Netherlands ... but now we're going to buy some new helicopters because we've decided we actually need them, after all ... hmmm ... okay - got to get back on topic ...)

Anyway - at this point in time, the problems are food, shelter, medical assistance - the delivery of all of which is a problem ... and helicopters are needed (doh!!!)
