Can anyone tell me if ATV's are a good patrol platform for a place like Afghanistan or is it too soft of a target. I've seen some advertisments for them in Canadian Military magazine, and I wondered if we use them;

I can't speak for Astan, cause I haven't used them there.

Here in North America, I feel they are a godsend for the light infantry...esp in my role where we need to get casualties out from close terrain.

Since there is talk about creating an airborne type force, I looked up and found this site where they show a vehicle called a Gecko8x8 ATV ADRD (Air Droppable Rapid Deployment) made by LTM Any thoughts on this type of system?

The Canadian army used four wheelers in East Timor in 1999 and last year placed an order for John Deere 6-4 Gators
                                    Diesel all-terrain vehicle
The diesel powered all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) offer a lightweight capability to haul small loads over the rough terrain of Afghanistan. The Army is purchasing the 6x4 M-GATOR manufactured by John Deere Ltd., the only diesel-fuelled utility ATV in production.

Estimated project value up to : $2.1 million
Quantity required : 48
Procurement : The contract will be sole-sourced to John Deere Ltd. The only type of fuel available to Canadian Forces deployed in Afghanistan is diesel; consequently, the M-GATOR is the only vehicle that meets the Army's requirements.
Delivery : Delivery will be complete by January 2006.
